Equatorial Guinea

Overview

The Equatorial Guinea national football team represents the country in international association football and is governed by the Federación Ecuatoguineana de Fútbol, which was founded in 1960. The team competes under the jurisdiction of FIFA and the Confederation of African Football. Equatorial Guinea gained greater continental visibility after qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations on several occasions, including as a co-host in 2012, and reaching the semi-finals of the 2015 edition as a notable achievement.

The squad has increasingly drawn on players of Equatoguinean descent who were born or raised abroad, a practice that has broadened the pool of available talent considerably. Notable players currently associated with the team include goalkeeper Jesús Owono, defenders Carlos Akapo and Saúl Coco, and forwards Aitor Embela, Manuel Sapunga, and Marvin Anieboh. The team has not won a major senior international title.
