Matthäus played in five World Cups and appeared 25 times in the tournament, a record. He captained West Germany to the 1990 title and took the Ballon d’Or that year, then became the first winner of the FIFA World Player of the Year award in 1991. His 150 caps remain a German record. He won the Serie A title with Inter Milan in 1989 and six Bundesliga titles across two spells at Bayern Munich.
