Manchester City visit a Nottingham Forest side running out of answers

Chris Yohou Avatar

Two days after beating RB Leipzig 3-2 on the road in the Champions League, Manchester City arrive at the City Ground looking to extend their good feeling into the league. For Nottingham Forest, the contrast could hardly be sharper: Oliver Glasner’s side have lost four of their last five Premier League matches, sit 19th on six points, and have yet to find a consistent way to stay in games at home. City are second in the table, 15 points ahead of Forest, and Erling Haaland leads the top-scoring chart with nine goals in nine appearances. Saturday’s visit is a test of a very different kind for both clubs.

Nottingham Forest vs Manchester City

What’s at stake

Forest are in the relegation zone, sitting 19th on six points from nine matches, one ahead of bottom-placed Sunderland. With a goal difference of minus six and only one win so far, the gap to the safety places is real but not yet irreversible. Crystal Palace in 18th have seven points, Manchester United in 17th also have seven. A point or three here would do more than any fixture in recent weeks to relieve the pressure around City Ground. City, meanwhile, are chasing Arsenal, who lead the table on 24 points, three clear of Pep Guardiola’s former club. Enzo Maresca’s side have dropped six points in their last two league outings, so a win would keep them in touch at the top.

For Forest, the consequences of another defeat are tangible. They would remain in the bottom three, still on six points, and their home record would read zero wins from five. For City, three points would put them back within striking distance of Arsenal before the November international break. A slip here, with Brighton on 19 points just behind, could allow the chasing pack to narrow the gap further.

How they got here

Forest’s last five Premier League results tell their own story: a loss at Brentford, a draw at Ipswich, a home defeat to Arsenal, a loss at Crystal Palace, and a home defeat to Coventry. That run of one point from five games covers the entire month of October and into November. Glasner has yet to find a defensive shape that holds, with 12 goals conceded in nine games. City’s recent form across competitions is mixed but trending upward. After consecutive Premier League defeats to Aston Villa and Brighton at the end of October, they bounced back with a 3-2 win at Leipzig in midweek.

In the Premier League alone, City have seven wins and two defeats from nine games, good for 21 points and second place. Forest’s six points put them three behind Crystal Palace and Manchester United, who both sit just above the bottom three. On form, momentum, and squad depth, the gap between these two sides this season has been significant.

Key battle to watch

Forest’s ability to press City’s build-up will be the central tactical thread to follow. When teams have allowed City to settle into their passing rhythms from the back, they have consistently been punished, and Haaland’s nine Premier League goals this season make any defensive error costly. Forest’s midfield, anchored by Ibrahim Sangare and Xavier Schlager, will need to win second balls and disrupt City before they reach their creative players. If Forest drop into a low block and try to absorb pressure, they risk being pinned back for long stretches, which has led to late goals conceding situations in several of their recent losses. How Glasner sets up without the ball will largely determine whether this stays competitive past the hour mark.

Our Prediction

City have won six of the last nine meetings between these sides and arrive with Haaland in the form of his life at the top of the scoring charts. Forest have conceded in every home match this season and have yet to find a consistent structure defensively. City’s depth and confidence coming off the Leipzig win should be enough to see them through, though Glasner’s side has shown at times this season that they can make things difficult for 45 minutes before the class difference tells.
