Chris Yohou Avatar

Paxten Aaronson put Colorado Rapids ahead in the 22nd minute, but Facundo Torres cancelled it out with 11 minutes to go to earn Austin a 1-1 draw at Q2 Stadium on Wednesday night. The result keeps Colorado seventh in the Western Conference on 32 points, while Austin remain 14th on 26. Brad Stuver was kept busy with four saves to ensure the home side at least walked away with something.

  • 27′, Colorado are forced into an early change as Youssef Maziz comes off and Joshua Atencio enters the game.
  • 45′, Joshua Atencio picks up a yellow card just before the break, and Austin make a change of their own, with Ilie Sanchez replaced by Jorge Alastuey at half-time.

Tactical Breakdown

Austin had the better of possession, controlling 57 percent of the ball and generating 11 shots to Colorado’s 11, but only two of those were on target. The home side’s 3-4-3 shape struggled to create clean openings in the first half, and their seven offsides indicated a high-line approach that repeatedly backfired. Colorado, set up in a 4-3-3 by Matt Wells, were more direct, putting five shots on goal and blocking four of Austin’s attempts.

The game’s turning point came when interim Austin coach Davy Arnaud used his second-half substitutions to alter the dynamic. Bringing on Zan Kolmanic at the hour mark injected width and urgency down the flank, and it was precisely his delivery that led to Torres’ equalizer in the 79th minute. Colorado had looked comfortable for much of the second half on a 1-0 lead, but a drop in defensive intensity in the final quarter gave Austin the chance they needed.

For Colorado, the early exit of Youssef Maziz at the 27-minute mark disrupted their midfield structure before it had settled, forcing the Rapids to reorganize through Joshua Atencio, who then picked up a yellow card right at half-time. That lack of midfield continuity made it harder to sustain pressure and build on the lead, and Reggie Cannon’s yellow in the 62nd minute added further discipline concerns.

Player Ratings

8.0/10. The best player on the pitch for long stretches, scoring the opener and causing Austin’s backline problems throughout his 90 minutes.

Ž. Kolmanič
7.5/10. Came on at the hour mark and immediately made an impact, providing the assist for Torres’ equalizer before the final whistle.

Stuver
6.5/10. Kept Austin in the game with four saves, denying Colorado on multiple occasions to prevent the deficit from growing.

Standings

Head To Head

Verdict

The draw does little to shift the standings in a meaningful way for either side. Colorado stay seventh in the West, still on track for a playoff berth, while Austin remain in 14th, needing a run of results to close the gap on the playoff places. Torres’ late strike at least stopped the home crowd from leaving empty-handed, but Austin will know a point from a home game against a conference rival is not the statement they needed.
