Allegri’s Napoli need a response after Arsenal loss, Bologna won’t make it easy

Three days after being shut out 0-1 by Arsenal in their Champions League opener, Napoli return to the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona on Sunday needing to halt a run that has produced just one win in their last four competitive matches. Massimiliano Allegri’s side sit 12th in Serie A with 3 points from three games, a position that looks uncomfortable given the squad assembled around Kevin De Bruyne and Scott McTominay. Bologna, meanwhile, arrive in just as uncertain shape: Vincenzo Tedesco’s team has picked up only one point all season, drawing 2-2 at home with Sassuolo last weekend, and sits 16th.

Napoli vs Bologna

What’s at stake

Nine points separate Napoli (3 pts, 12th) from leaders Lazio (10 pts), and four teams above them already have seven or more points from their opening fixtures. The top four in Serie A earn direct Champions League group-stage berths, and Napoli are already seven points off that pace. A second league defeat in a row would extend a troubling early-season gap before the standings take firmer shape.

For Bologna the situation is more pressing in the short term. With just one point from three games and two losses, Tedesco’s side sits one place above the relegation zone at this early stage. A loss at the Maradona would drop them level with the teams already in the bottom three on points, while a first win of the campaign would offer some breathing room and suggest the 2-2 draw with Sassuolo was a turning point rather than an outlier.

How they got here

Napoli’s form across their last three competitive league matches reads LLW: they beat Genoa away on August 22, then lost at Inter 2-3, and dropped a home game to Como 1-2, leaving them 12th in Serie A with just 3 points before the Arsenal defeat added another setback. Three defeats in a row in official matches is not the start Allegri would have scripted for a squad of this caliber. Bologna’s competitive run is similarly sobering: losses at Lazio (0-1) and at Atalanta (0-1) bookend the Sassuolo draw, and they have scored just twice in three Serie A outings while conceding four.

Napoli sit 12th on 3 points, nine behind Lazio at the summit. Bologna are 16th on 1 point, level on points with Parma and one above the relegation zone. Lazio, AS Roma, and Inter are all on nine points, making the gap at the top feel significant even though the season is young.

Key battle to watch

De Bruyne operating in Napoli’s midfield against Bologna’s engine room of Tommaso Pobega and El Azzouzi is the contest that could define the match. De Bruyne’s ability to find pockets of space and deliver quickly will be tested by a Bologna block that will almost certainly look to compress the center and force Napoli wide. If Tedesco’s side can disrupt De Bruyne’s rhythm and transition quickly through Riccardo Orsolini and Artem Dovbyk, they have a legitimate route to something at the Maradona. Napoli’s defensive record so far, five goals conceded in three Serie A games, suggests they are not yet the unit Allegri wants, and Bologna’s attackers will be aware of that.

Head To Head

Our Prediction

Both teams are short on confidence and shorter on clean sheets, which points toward a match where goals are possible at both ends. Napoli’s home record in this fixture (a 3-0 win in August 2024, a Super Cup win in December 2025) gives them a structural edge at the Maradona, and the pressure to respond after the Arsenal loss is a real motivator for Allegri’s players. Bologna have shown they can score, but their defensive frailty away from home makes it hard to back them to leave with three points. A narrow Napoli win feels the most likely outcome, though a share of the spoils would not be a surprise given how unsteady both sides look right now.
