Bouanga brace and Son’s assist double carry LAFC past Austin 3-1

Chris Yohou Avatar

Denis Bouanga and Son Heung-Min combined to dismantle Austin FC at Banc of California Stadium on Wednesday night, with Bouanga’s brace and Son’s pair of assists doing the bulk of the damage in a 3-1 win for Los Angeles FC. All three LAFC goals arrived in a breathless 20-minute second-half stretch between the 52nd and 72nd minutes, and despite a brief equalizer from Brandon Vazquez that made it 1-1, the hosts were never really threatened. The result moves LAFC to 45 points in the Western Conference, keeping them in sixth place and inside the playoff positions.

Los Angeles FC vs Austin

Key Moments

  • 52′, Bouanga opens the scoring. Son Heung-Min picks out the forward in the box and Bouanga converts to give LAFC the lead.
  • 63′, Double substitution from both sides. LAFC bring on Jacob Shaffelburg and Mathieu Choiniere; Austin introduce Myrto Uzuni.
  • 66′, Austin level immediately after their substitution. Brandon Vazquez tucks away a finish, assisted by the freshly introduced Uzuni, to make it 1-1.
  • 67′, LAFC restore the lead within a minute. Son Heung-Min delivers again, finding Bouanga for his second goal of the night.
  • 72′, Son Heung-Min adds a third. Jacob Shaffelburg, on as a substitute, turns provider and Son finishes to put the game out of reach.

Tactical Breakdown

Austin carried the ball well throughout, finishing with 60 percent possession and 590 passes compared to LAFC’s 385. But possession did not translate into danger. Austin managed only four shots on goal and their expected goals figure of 0.65 tells the real story: the visitors rarely threatened Hugo Lloris in a meaningful way. LAFC, by contrast, generated an xG of 4.4 from 11 shots on target and 28 total attempts, operating with ruthless efficiency on the counter despite ceding territory for long stretches.

The game’s pivotal sequence came between the 63rd and 72nd minutes. Xavier Tamarit’s double substitution, bringing on Shaffelburg and Choiniere, injected pace into LAFC’s wide areas. Austin’s own change, introducing Uzuni, initially paid off with Vazquez’s 66th-minute equalizer. But the response was immediate: Bouanga’s second goal came just 60 seconds later, and Son’s finish at 72 minutes, set up by Shaffelburg, ended any realistic hope Austin had of taking something from the game. Son himself was substituted off at 78 minutes, his night’s work already complete with a goal and two assists.

Austin’s structure in a 3-4-3 left them vulnerable on the flanks during LAFC’s transition moments. Their high pass volume reflected a team trying to build through the lines, but without the sharpness in the final third to turn possession into chances. Goalkeeper Brad Stuver was busy, stopping eight shots, and without those saves the scoreline could have been considerably worse for the visitors.

Head To Head

Verdict

LAFC sit sixth in the Western Conference with 45 points after 30 games, seven back of the top three but comfortably inside the playoff spots. Austin remain 14th on 31 points, now two losses in a row and seven points adrift of the top nine, with their postseason prospects looking increasingly slim. For LAFC, the performance of Son Heung-Min and Bouanga in combination gives interim coach Xavi Tamarit genuine optimism heading into the final weeks of the regular season.
