Colorado Rapids vs San Diego: two struggling sides meet in a midtable standoff

Chris Yohou Avatar

Two teams separated by a single point and two places in the Western Conference table meet Wednesday when Colorado Rapids host San Diego at home in Matchday 18. Colorado sit 13th with 16 points from 15 games, one point adrift of their visitors who occupy 12th on 17. Neither side is in danger of relegation, but the Western Conference playoff picture is tight enough that dropping further behind right now would make the second half of the season considerably harder. Marcus Ingvartsen, San Diego’s standout attacker with 11 goals in the league this season, could be the difference maker.

What’s at stake

The Western Conference top seven is where playoff spots are decided, and Vancouver Whitecaps and San Jose Earthquakes both sit on 32 points at the summit, 16 clear of Colorado and 15 ahead of San Diego. Los Angeles FC are third on 27, Real Salt Lake fourth on 26. That gap is significant, but it is not yet beyond reach midway through the regular season. Both Colorado and San Diego need a run of form, and that starts here.

A Colorado win would pull them level with San Diego on points and potentially move them up to 12th depending on results elsewhere, giving a team that has won just five of 15 games something to build on. For San Diego, a win would open a two-point gap over Colorado and move them within striking range of the playoff fringe. A loss, by contrast, would leave coach M. Varas’ side seven points off the top seven with just a handful of games played in the second half of the campaign.

How they got here

Colorado’s recent league form reads poorly: their last five competitive results across all competitions show two wins, one draw, and two losses, with their most recent MLS outing a 1-2 home defeat to FC Dallas on May 24. Before that, they lost 1-2 at Real Salt Lake and beat Minnesota United 1-0 on the road. The Rapids did play a friendly against FC Juarez 13 days ago that ended 1-1, which at least gives them some minutes in the legs heading into this one after nearly two months without a competitive fixture. San Diego’s last five MLS results tell a different story in terms of character if not consistency: a 5-0 demolition of Austin on May 14, followed by a 1-1 draw at Seattle, a 3-3 draw at home to FC Cincinnati, and then a 2-4 home loss to Vancouver. Their form code reads LDWDD across their last five.

Colorado are 13th in the West on 16 points, five back from 10th-place St. Louis City and seven from 7th-place Houston Dynamo, which represents the rough edge of playoff contention at this stage. San Diego sit 12th on 17 points, level with Portland Timbers above them and one ahead of Colorado below. The gap between these two teams and the playoff places is real but not insurmountable, which gives the match genuine relevance even if the standings do not yet demand urgency.

Key battle to watch

Marcus Ingvartsen is worth watching closely in this one. The San Diego forward has 11 goals in MLS this season, placing him fifth in the league scoring charts alongside San Jose’s P. Judd, just two back from the joint leaders Messi and Cuypers on 13. How Colorado’s backline, which has conceded 24 goals in 15 games, sets up to handle Ingvartsen will go a long way to deciding the result. If the Rapids allow him the kind of space San Diego’s last few opponents have, they could find themselves chasing the game early.

Our Prediction

San Diego have the more settled recent MLS form and carry the greater attacking threat through Ingvartsen, who has been one of the more reliable scorers in the Western Conference this season. Colorado have been leaky at the back and their last competitive match was a friendly nearly two weeks ago. A San Diego win or draw looks the more likely outcome, but the Rapids’ home record and San Diego’s habit of conceding in bunches means this could go either way.
