Haaland and the rematch: City host Brighton again, this time it counts

Chris Yohou Avatar

The ink is barely dry on Tuesday’s 2-2 League Cup draw between these two sides, and now they do it all over again. Manchester City welcome Brighton back to the Etihad on Saturday for a Premier League fixture that carries considerably more weight than the cup encounter. Enzo Maresca’s side sit top of the table on 21 points but have Arsenal level with them in second, and Fabian Hürzeler’s Brighton, five points back in third, are hunting a result that would tighten the top of the table considerably.

What’s at stake

Manchester City and Arsenal are locked together at 21 points after eight games, separated only by goal difference. Brighton sit third on 16 points, five behind the leaders. A Brighton win at the Etihad would cut the gap to two points and shift the title conversation significantly. For City, a victory would open a five-point cushion over the Seagulls and reinforce their grip on top spot heading into November.

The top four in this table is tight enough that the standings could look very different by the end of matchday nine. Chelsea are fifth on 13 points and Liverpool fourth on 15, meaning a Brighton slip or a City win could reshuffle the European picture just as much as the title race. Neither side is in any danger lower down the table, so this is purely about accumulating points at the top end.

How they got here

Strip out the cup tie two days ago and City’s recent domestic form reads well: a 3-2 home win over Ipswich in their last league outing, although a 1-2 defeat at Aston Villa the week after showed they are not invulnerable on the road or when pressed. Brighton’s last Premier League result was a 0-2 loss at Liverpool, sandwiched between a 5-0 dismantling of Crystal Palace at home and the Etihad cup draw. Hürzeler’s side have been prolific, scoring 23 league goals in eight games, the most of any side in the top four.

City lead the table with 21 points from eight games, seven wins and one defeat. Brighton are third on 16, with five wins, one draw and two losses. The five-point gap is real but not comfortable for City given Arsenal’s identical points tally and the Seagulls’ attacking output this season.

Key battle to watch

Erling Haaland leads the Premier League scoring charts with nine goals in eight games and will test a Brighton backline that has conceded just seven league goals all season. That defensive record is the best of the sides chasing City, and how Brighton’s center-backs handle Haaland in and around the box will go a long way to deciding this game. If City’s supply lines to Haaland are cut, Rayan Cherki, who already has four league goals, becomes the creative outlet Maresca will lean on to find a way through.

Head To Head

Our Prediction

The head-to-head record over the last ten meetings is balanced, with four wins apiece split by four draws, and Brighton have won the last two Premier League encounters between these sides. City’s home record and Haaland’s form give Maresca’s team the edge, but Brighton’s defensive solidity and their ability to create, 23 league goals in eight games, means this is unlikely to be straightforward. Expect City to edge it, though Brighton have shown enough in recent weeks to make it competitive until the final whistle.
