PSG head to Le Havre riding five straight wins

Chris Yohou Avatar

Three days after a 2-0 home win over Lyon, Paris Saint-Germain take their winning run on the road to Stade Océane, where a Le Havre side sitting bottom of Ligue 1 with two points from eight matches awaits. Luis Enrique’s squad has won five consecutive games across all competitions, including back-to-back Champions League victories over Manchester City and Barcelona, and another at the weekend would extend their lead at the summit. Le Havre, meanwhile, are in a different kind of crisis: zero wins, six defeats, and a goal difference of minus seven after conceding 15 goals in eight games.

Le Havre vs Paris Saint Germain

What’s at stake

PSG lead Ligue 1 with 17 points, one ahead of second-place Rennes (16) and two clear of Lille (15) in third. A win at Stade Océane on Friday keeps the pressure on both rivals and consolidates their position at the top of the table after eight rounds. For Le Havre, the picture is starker: they sit 18th and last, 15 points adrift of 9th-place Lorient, the final qualifying spot in the division. With 0 wins and 2 draws from 8 played, D. Digard’s side have yet to find a formula that works in the league.

A PSG victory would push them to 20 points and make it increasingly difficult for any challenger to close the gap before the winter break. For Le Havre, any result short of a win leaves them entrenched at the foot of the table with a growing points deficit to the sides directly above them. Estac Troyes, 17th with 5 points, are three points clear, and Le Havre have not beaten PSG in their last eight competitive meetings.

Le Havre vs Paris Saint Germain

How they got here

PSG arrive with five wins in a row: a 3-1 home win over Le Mans, a 4-2 away victory at Manchester City in the Champions League, a 3-1 win at Strasbourg, a 4-2 Champions League win over Barcelona at home, and last Saturday’s 2-0 defeat of Lyon. The form reads WWWWW in the standings, and the goals-for column (16 in 8 Ligue 1 matches) reflects consistent attacking output. Le Havre’s last five competitive fixtures tell a different story: a 2-3 loss at Toulouse, a friendly win over Boulogne, a 0-1 defeat at Lille, a 1-3 home loss to Auxerre, and last weekend’s 3-4 defeat away at Marseille. Four losses from four Ligue 1 matches, leaking four goals in the most recent outing.

In the table, PSG are 15 points clear of Le Havre, who are stranded in the relegation zone. Rennes in second are just one point behind the leaders, so Enrique’s side cannot afford complacency regardless of the opponent. For Le Havre, the gap to safety is significant but the season is not yet half-done, making every home game an opportunity they cannot afford to squander.

Key battle to watch

Le Havre’s defensive structure will be tested severely by PSG’s wide rotation. With Ousmane Dembele, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Desire Doue, and Mathys Tel-equivalent threats across the front line, PSG have the personnel to attack from multiple angles. Le Havre’s backline has already conceded 15 goals in 8 matches, the worst record in the division alongside only Estac Troyes at the bottom end. If Le Havre cannot reduce the spaces behind their midfield, PSG’s ability to transition quickly from deep could turn this into a difficult afternoon for Digard’s defence. The home side’s best hope is exploiting any defensive lapse from a PSG team that is rotating heavily across Champions League and Ligue 1 commitments.

Our Prediction

The head-to-head record tells a blunt story: Le Havre have not beaten PSG in eight attempts, and with the visitors in the form of their season across both domestic and European competition, there is little reason to expect that to change here. PSG should have enough quality to win comfortably, even if Luis Enrique uses this fixture to rotate ahead of upcoming fixtures. Le Havre will need a career-best collective performance to take anything from this.
