Lautaro’s Inter host struggling Parma with top spot in their sights

Chris Yohou Avatar

Seven days after a comfortable 2-0 friendly win over Lumezzane kept their legs ticking over during the international break, Inter return to Serie A action with something real on the line. Cristian Chivu’s side sit second in the table on 13 points, level with Roma and Lazio at the top of a compressed standings after five games. Parma arrive at San Siro having collected just four points from their opening five fixtures, and the head-to-head record alone tells a grim story for the visitors: Inter have won seven of the last 10 meetings between these sides, losing none.

Inter vs Parma

What’s at stake

The top of Serie A entering matchday 6 is unusually tight. Roma, Inter and Lazio are all locked on 13 points, with Cagliari a single point behind on 12 and AC Milan a further point back on 11. A win for Inter tonight would move them clear of Roma on goal difference at worst, and potentially to the top of the table outright depending on other results. The Champions League places, currently occupied by the top four sides, are the immediate prize, and the margins are fine enough that dropping points against a side like Parma would be felt.

For Parma, the picture is different. Sitting 15th on four points, level with Udinese, Torino, Monza and Fiorentina, they are not yet in a position of serious alarm but a defeat here would leave them relying on rivals around them to slip up. Their one win came against Genoa three weeks ago; since then they have gone quiet. A result at San Siro would do wonders for their confidence and their standing in a congested mid-table.

Inter vs Parma

How they got here

Inter’s last five competitive matches read W-D-W-L-W across all competitions: a 3-2 home win over Napoli, a 1-2 Champions League defeat at Real Madrid, a high-scoring 5-3 home victory against Udinese, a 2-2 draw away at Roma, and then the break-week friendly against Lumezzane. In Serie A specifically, Chivu’s side have been ruthless at home and only once conceded ground, that draw in the capital coming after conceding twice. They have scored 15 goals in five league games, the joint-best record in the division alongside Roma, and Lautaro Martinez has contributed four of those, placing him among the top scorers in the league.

Parma’s recent form is harder to dress up. Going back through their last five matches across competitions, they beat Genoa 2-1 at home, lost 1-2 away at Como, drew 1-1 with Monza at home, were knocked out of the Coppa Italia by Cremonese, and lost 0-2 at Juventus before that. The away record in particular is a concern: coach Carlos Cuesta Garcia has yet to see his side take a point on the road in Serie A this season.

Key battle to watch

The central midfield zone will likely decide how much Parma can contain this match. Inter’s Hakan Calhanoglu and Nicolo Barella control tempo and feed the forwards efficiently, while Parma’s midfield, built around Adrián Bernabé and Giovanni Fabbian, will need to press high and disrupt Inter’s build-up before it reaches Lautaro. If Inter’s midfield is allowed to operate at their usual rhythm, the Argentine striker will get the ball in dangerous positions repeatedly, and his four league goals already show how efficiently he converts those chances.

Our Prediction

The head-to-head record, Inter’s home form and the quality differential between these squads all point the same way. Parma have shown they can take points at home but have nothing on the road to suggest they can break that run here. Inter should control the match through their midfield and get Lautaro into good positions early, with the hosts likely to take the three points and move clear at the top, at least temporarily.
