Real Salt Lake down Sporting KC 3-1 with a dominant display

Chris Yohou Avatar

Morgan Guilavogui had a night to remember at Children’s Mercy Park, scoring twice as Real Salt Lake beat Sporting Kansas City 3-1 to move to 33 points in the Western Conference. RSL struck twice inside the opening 14 minutes, and despite a brief KC response, Guilavogui’s second goal on the hour sealed it. Pablo Mastroeni’s side were the better team for most of the evening, generating an xG of 1.05 to Kansas City’s 0.79 and putting eight shots on target.

Sporting Kansas City vs Real Salt Lake

Key Moments

  • 11′, Guilavogui opens the scoring, finishing off a pass from Caliskan to give Real Salt Lake the lead.
  • 14′, Solans doubles the advantage just three minutes later, making it 2-0 to RSL with no assist recorded.
  • 26′, Calheira pulls one back for Sporting KC, converting an assist from Andre Luiz to make it 2-1 and give the hosts a foothold.
  • 61′, Guilavogui restores the two-goal cushion, again set up by Caliskan, effectively ending the contest at 3-1.

Tactical Breakdown

Real Salt Lake lined up in a 5-4-1 and used it aggressively in transition. Despite finishing the game with 49% possession, they were sharper in the final third: 13 total shots, nine inside the box, and eight on target against a Kansas City side that managed only three shots on goal from eight attempts. The xG gap told the same story, RSL at 1.05, SKC at 0.79, and Cleveland kept the scoreline respectable with five saves.

The 61st-minute double change by Raphaël Wicky, bringing on Capita and Davis for Afrifa and Agyabeng, was a sign of desperation rather than design. Within seconds of those substitutions, Guilavogui had made it 3-1, leaving Kansas City with nothing to play for in the final half hour. RSL responded with their own change moments later, swapping Marczuk for Chadwick Zachary Booth, and the game settled into a comfortable close-out.

Kansas City’s 4-4-2 created some early danger, and Calheira’s finish at 26 minutes showed there was something there. But the hosts committed 14 fouls, collected three yellow cards in the final quarter of the game, and never seriously threatened after the equaliser. The gap between 2-1 and 3-1 was too large to bridge against a side that defended its lead with composure.

Player Ratings

Guilavogui
9.0/10. Two goals, both assisted by Caliskan, and a constant threat before being withdrawn at 85 minutes. The match’s dominant individual.
Caliskan
8.5/10. Two assists and a full 90 minutes of quality work in midfield; the engine behind RSL’s best moments.
Solans
8.0/10. Scored the second goal at 14 minutes and held his place until the 77th, contributing to a relentless RSL start.
Calheira
7.5/10. KC’s lone bright spot, scoring the consolation goal at 26 minutes before being withdrawn at 73.
Cleveland
7.0/10. Made five saves to prevent the scoreline getting worse; little he could do about any of the three goals.
Sanabria
7.0/10. Solid defensively across the full 90 minutes at the heart of RSL’s back line, earning a yellow card but staying disciplined overall.
André Luiz
6.5/10. Picked up the assist for Calheira’s goal and was one of KC’s more active midfielders, but the overall effort was not enough.

Verdict

The win keeps Real Salt Lake at 33 points, level on points with Portland Timbers and San Diego in the Western Conference but sitting 12th on rank. Sporting Kansas City, rooted to 15th place on 22 points, continue a difficult season at Children’s Mercy Park. For RSL, according to Fox Sports, Guilavogui’s brace was the headline, but the platform Caliskan provided with two assists was just as important to a performance that showed Mastroeni’s side can be a threat on the road.
