The club was founded in 1995 as one of the original MLS franchises, initially operating under the name Kansas City Wiz before later becoming Kansas City Wizards and eventually adopting its current name in 2011. The club plays its home matches at Children's Mercy Park, an open-air stadium widely regarded as one of the finest football-specific venues in the United States.
