Red Bulls host Chicago Fire three days after shutout loss to Nashville

Chris Yohou Avatar

Three days after being shut out 0-1 at home by Nashville SC, the New York Red Bulls have little time to dwell on it. Chicago Fire arrive at Sports Illustrated Stadium on August 22 riding five straight wins across all competitions, sitting third in the Eastern Conference with 35 points. For Michael Bradley’s side, sitting eighth with 25 points, a defeat here would open the door for DC United to close the gap to just one point. The gap between playoff rounds is also on the line: the Red Bulls currently sit in a 1/16-final slot, while Chicago occupy a 1/8-final berth.

What’s at stake

The Eastern Conference sends nine teams to the playoffs. New York Red Bulls are eighth with 25 points, one point clear of DC United in ninth. Chicago Fire are third with 35 points, four points behind Inter Miami and 11 behind leader Nashville SC. Both clubs are inside the top nine, so the conversation is not about making the postseason but about where they land in it. The difference between eighth and a higher seed is the difference between entering in the 1/16-finals or the 1/8-finals, with the Red Bulls currently on the wrong side of that cut line.

A Chicago win consolidates their hold on third place and keeps pressure on Inter Miami. For the Red Bulls, a victory would move them to 28 points and create breathing room above the playoff bubble, while also giving Bradley’s group something to build on after back-to-back league losses. A second straight home defeat would leave them vulnerable to being overtaken by DC United and potentially dropping into a more dangerous part of the bracket.

How they got here

New York’s last five league matches tell a difficult story: four losses and one win, with the sole bright spot a 3-2 home result over Orlando City on August 1. Since then, they have dropped 0-2 to Charlotte, lost 1-3 at Philadelphia, fell 1-2 at Atlanta United, and then absorbed that blank against Nashville. Chicago’s sequence looks entirely different. Gregg Berhalter’s side won their last five across all competitions, including three Leagues Cup victories over Necaxa, Santos Laguna, and Cruz Azul, before returning to MLS action with wins over Portland Timbers (2-1) and at Orlando City (2-1) last Tuesday.

In the Eastern Conference table, Chicago sit third at 35 points from 19 games played. New York are eighth at 25 points from 20 games, meaning the Fire hold a 10-point advantage and a game in hand. New England Revolution are fourth at 33 points, so Chicago cannot afford complacency if they want to lock down a top-three seed.

Key battle to watch

H. Cuypers has 13 league goals this season, tied for the top of the MLS scoring chart alongside Lionel Messi and two others. He is Chicago’s focal point in attack and will test a Red Bulls backline that has conceded 42 goals in 20 games, the worst defensive record of any team currently inside the Eastern Conference playoff positions. New York’s center-backs will need to organize early and limit the space Cuypers typically exploits in behind. If Bradley’s defense can contain him and force Chicago to build through wider areas, the Red Bulls have a chance to stay in the game long enough to use their home crowd.

Standings

Head To Head

Our Prediction

Chicago arrive with five straight wins and a 10-point cushion over their hosts, and the Red Bulls have looked porous defensively through this stretch. Berhalter’s side has the quality and the confidence to control large portions of this match, and Cuypers gives them a clear edge at center-forward. Expect Chicago to take points back to Illinois, though the head-to-head record between these two, three wins apiece in the last ten, is a reminder that the Red Bulls are capable of producing something at home when it matters.
