San Diego look to bounce back after Portland loss as Colorado arrive in form

Chris Yohou Avatar

Three days after getting beaten 3-1 at Portland, San Diego return to Snapdragon Stadium on Saturday needing to find answers against a Colorado Rapids side that has won three of its last four MLS games. The defeat to the Timbers left Mikey Varas’ side sitting 13th in the Western Conference with 24 points, well outside the nine playoff spots. Colorado arrive off the back of a 1-0 home win over Los Angeles FC, sitting seventh with 28 points and firmly in the playoff picture.

What’s at stake

The Western Conference playoff picture is crowded, and four points separate Colorado (seventh, 28 points) from San Diego (13th, 24 points). With the top nine teams in the conference qualifying for the postseason, Colorado are inside the cut with a cushion, while San Diego sit four points adrift of the ninth-place Portland Timbers, who are on 27 points after 20 games. A win at Snapdragon would not only close that gap for San Diego but could put genuine pressure on the teams just above them. For Colorado, three points would push them closer to locking down a comfortable playoff berth and potentially move them within striking distance of sixth-placed St. Louis City on 30 points.

A loss for San Diego would deepen the anxiety around their playoff hopes and leave them five or more points behind the cutoff depending on other results. For Colorado, a defeat would not sink their postseason chances given their current position, but it would represent a missed opportunity to bank points while the teams above them are still within reach.

How they got here

San Diego’s last five competitive outings paint a mixed picture. Before the 3-1 loss at Portland, they had beaten Los Angeles FC 1-0 on the road in MLS play, with their other recent results coming in Leagues Cup competition. That Portland result was a step back after a promising stretch, and Varas will know his side cannot afford to string together back-to-back poor performances. Colorado’s MLS form has been sharper: three straight wins over Austin, Sporting Kansas City and Los Angeles FC, their only blemish in that run a 1-0 away loss at St. Louis City in late July. Matt Wells’ side looks well-organized defensively, having conceded just one goal in those last three victories.

Colorado sit seventh in the Western Conference on 28 points from 20 games, nine wins and one draw against 10 losses. San Diego are 13th with 24 points, six wins, six draws and eight losses. The gap between the sides is four points, but the conference table from seventh to 13th is tight enough that a single result can shift several positions.

Key battle to watch

San Diego’s ability to control possession and create chances at home will be tested by a Colorado defensive unit that has conceded just 25 goals in 20 games, the second-best goals-against figure among Western Conference sides outside the top six. The Rapids have shown they are comfortable sitting compact and hitting on the counter, as the wins over LAFC and Kansas City demonstrate. San Diego scored 34 goals this season but have also shipped 32, meaning they tend to play in open games. If Colorado can keep things tight in the first half and exploit transitions, they have the shape to frustrate a home side still working through the fallout of the Portland defeat.

Our Prediction

Colorado Rapids arrive with better rhythm, a tighter defensive record and the confidence of three recent MLS wins behind them. San Diego have shown they can beat good teams at home, but the hangover from a 3-1 loss and the pressure of needing points could make for a tentative performance. Expect a close game, but Colorado’s current form gives them the edge to take at least a point, and possibly all three if they stay organized on the road.
