San Jose can’t afford another slip as battered Quakes host Minnesota

Chris Yohou Avatar

A 1-0 defeat at the Los Angeles Galaxy on August 20 left San Jose Earthquakes with little room for comfort at PayPal Park. The Quakes sit fourth in the Western Conference with 33 points, but their grip on a top-seven playoff spot has loosened after four losses in their last five matches. Minnesota United arrive in Santa Clara on the back of a 2-1 home defeat to Atlanta United, 11th in the West and eight points outside the playoff picture. Two clubs trying to arrest a slide meet at a venue where neither side can afford to keep bleeding points.

San Jose Earthquakes vs Minnesota United FC

What’s at stake

San Jose hold fourth place in the Western Conference with 33 points from 20 matches, level on points with fifth-placed FC Dallas. Houston Dynamo lead the conference on 38, Vancouver Whitecaps are second on 37 and Los Angeles FC third on 34. The top nine teams in each conference qualify for the MLS playoffs, so San Jose are comfortably inside that bracket for now, but the Earthquakes are separated from sixth-placed St. Louis City by just three points. A continued run of poor results could see them slide toward the lower end of the qualifying spots before the regular season closes.

For Minnesota, the math is harder. Cameron Knowles’s side are 11th on 25 points, tied with Los Angeles Galaxy on the same total but behind on other metrics. Portland Timbers in ninth have 27 points and Real Salt Lake in eighth have 28, meaning the Loons need a run of wins to close that gap and get back into the playoff conversation. A loss here would put them nine points behind the ninth-place cutoff with games ticking away, making a recovery substantially more difficult.

How they got here

San Jose’s last five MLS results read L-L-L-D-L: a 0-4 home drubbing by Orlando City, a 1-1 draw with LA Galaxy, a 2-4 loss at FC Cincinnati, a 1-3 home defeat to St. Louis City, and then last Thursday’s 0-1 loss in Carson. The Quakes have shipped 16 goals across those five outings and scored just four. Bruce Arena’s team have not won a league match since late July, and the defensive numbers suggest the issues run deeper than individual errors. Minnesota’s recent record in MLS is no more reassuring: their last two league matches produced a draw at Real Salt Lake (1-1) and then the home loss to Atlanta. Their last five results across all competitions are L-D-W-D-L, with the wins and draws coming in the Leagues Cup against Mexican opposition.

In the Western Conference table, San Jose’s 33 points put them one point ahead of third-placed LAFC with a game in hand over Vancouver. That buffer looks healthy on paper, but the form column tells a different story. Minnesota’s 25 points leave them 10th or 11th depending on tiebreakers, and they have drawn seven of their 20 matches, a habit of dropping points from winning positions that has defined their season.

Key battle to watch

With both backlines struggling, the contest between Minnesota’s wide attackers Bongokuhle Hlongwane and Khiry Yeboah against San Jose’s full-backs will likely determine the tempo of the match. San Jose have conceded 28 goals in the Western Conference table this season, identical to Minnesota’s own total. Whichever side can impose defensive structure and limit exposure down the flanks stands the better chance of breaking the spiral of poor results. If neither can, this has the look of another high-scoring evening at PayPal Park.

Head To Head

Our Prediction

San Jose’s form is alarming, but home advantage and Minnesota’s own defensive frailty give Bruce Arena’s side a narrow edge here. The Earthquakes have enough attacking quality to find a goal, and Minnesota have not shown the consistency on the road to take something from a team that still has playoff stakes on the line. Expect a tight match that San Jose shade, though a clean sheet for either side feels unlikely given how both defenses have performed recently.
