Valencia vs Celta Vigo: a Mestalla derby with a history of big swings

Chris Yohou Avatar

The last time these two met at Mestalla, back in April, Celta Vigo left Valencia with all three points after a 3-2 comeback. Before that, Celta had beaten them 4-1 at home in January. Carlos Corberán’s side will be looking to settle a score on Saturday when they host Claudio Giraldez’s team in what is only the second round of the La Liga season, but the rivalry carries weight that goes well beyond the standings. Both clubs arrive at Mestalla on zero points, making this an early opportunity to establish some momentum in a table that has already started to take shape without them.

What’s at stake

Neither Valencia nor Celta Vigo have played a competitive La Liga match yet this season, each sitting on zero points after one round. At the top of the table, Espanyol, Alaves and Sevilla have each collected three points from their opening games, so a win here would immediately bring the victors into the conversation just two games into the campaign. Staying pointless after matchday 2, on the other hand, means chasing the early pace-setters from the off.

For Valencia, the pressure of hosting in front of Mestalla’s crowd makes this more than a routine fixture. A home loss would put them level on points with sides already in the relegation places, while a win would lift Corberán’s squad to somewhere in the top half depending on other results. For Celta, a positive result on the road would signal that last season’s heavy defeats to Valencia at their own ground were more than an anomaly, they’ve beaten the hosts in three of the last five meetings between the sides.

How they got here

Valencia’s preseason was mixed at best. They beat Eldense 3-0 and Derby 2-1, but dropped points against Castellón and lost at home to Newcastle 1-2 in their final warm-up. Celta’s preparation looked more settled: they beat Sporting Gijon 1-0 and Sassuolo 4-1, then held Napoli to a 1-1 draw in their last outing before the season began. Neither sequence tells you much about competitive readiness, but Celta’s results against stronger opposition carry a slightly more encouraging feel going into August.

On the table after one played game each, Valencia sit 13th and Celta 12th, both on zero points, with no goals scored or conceded in league action yet. The sides directly above them, Real Betis, Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid and Barcelona, are also yet to play their opening matches, so the standings are fluid. What is clear is that the top three spots carry Champions League qualification and the division will separate quickly over the first month.

Key battle to watch

The contest in midfield will likely decide this one. Celta’s Iago Aspas remains the focal point of their attack and Giraldez will want to create space for him through quick central combinations. Valencia’s Javi Guerra and Pepelu will need to control the tempo and deny Celta those pockets between the lines. Corberán tends to press high when the conditions suit, but Celta showed against Napoli that they can play through pressure. If Valencia’s midfield two can win the second balls and push the game into Celta’s half, the hosts have the personnel up front, particularly Hugo Duro and Arnaut Danjuma, to make it count.

Head To Head

Our Prediction

The head-to-head record is as even as it gets over the last ten meetings, but Celta’s form through preseason and their recent habit of taking points at Mestalla gives them a slight edge coming in. Valencia at home with a crowd behind them is never easy to discount, and Corberán will set up to be hard to beat. A tight game decided by a single moment feels most likely, with Celta having enough quality in attack to nick something on the road.
