Villa look to bounce back after Bournemouth battering as Fulham arrive at Villa Park

Chris Yohou Avatar

Three days after getting taken apart 3-0 by Bournemouth in the League Cup Round of 16, Aston Villa return to Villa Park on Saturday looking to put that performance behind them. Unai Emery’s side sit ninth in the Premier League with 11 points from eight games, three points off the Europa League spots. Fulham, who lost 1-0 at home to Crystal Palace in their own League Cup exit on the same midweek round, make the trip to Birmingham in 15th place with 8 points. Two teams dusting off cup disappointments, one Premier League match to make something of it.

What’s at stake

The top eight in the Premier League earn European football next season, with Champions League places going to the top four. Manchester City and Arsenal lead the way on 21 points each, with Brighton third on 16. Aston Villa sit ninth on 11 points, level with Brentford, Leeds and Newcastle but separated by goal difference. Three points on Saturday would pull Emery’s side into a cluster of teams who could legitimately push for a European spot over the second half of the season. Fulham are further back on 8 points, five points from eighth place, with four losses in eight league games making the gap harder to close with every passing week.

For Villa, a home win would be a clean statement after the Bournemouth setback, confirming that their League Cup exit was a blip rather than a trend. They beat Manchester City in the league just last weekend and have won at Newcastle this season, so the quality is there. For Fulham, dropping further back from the European places without registering a win here would make Álvaro Arbeloa’s first season in charge a trickier proposition. The Cottagers have only two wins in eight league outings, and they cannot afford to let that gap grow.

Aston Villa vs Fulham

How they got here

Before the League Cup defeat at Bournemouth, Villa had won three in a row across competitions: a 6-0 Champions League win over Fenerbahçe, a 1-0 Premier League victory at Newcastle, and a 3-1 Champions League win over Viking, before beating Manchester City 2-1 at Villa Park on October 24. The 3-0 loss at Bournemouth snapped that run. Fulham’s league form reads W-W-L-D-D going back to September, with wins over Coventry and Hull City sandwiching a 2-1 loss at Ipswich. The draw with Manchester United and the draw before that bookend a side that grinds out tight results when things go their way, but cannot find a way through when they don’t.

Aston Villa are ninth with 11 points from 3 wins, 2 draws and 3 losses, scoring 9 and conceding 12 in the league. Fulham are 15th on 8 points, with 2 wins, 2 draws and 4 defeats, scoring 8 and conceding 10. The gap between the two sides is three points, but Villa have the better goal difference and have already proved they can handle top-half opposition this season.

Key battle to watch

Fulham’s midfield setup under Arbeloa will be tested by Villa’s press and counter-press. Emery’s side have shown they can overwhelm teams in transition, as the Fenerbahçe and Newcastle results show. Fulham rely on players like Sander Berge, Tom Cairney and Alex Iwobi to hold structure and move the ball quickly through the lines. If Villa’s João Gomes and Boubacar Kamara can win the midfield battle and force Fulham into longer passes, the Cottagers’ attacking players will be isolated. Rodrigo Muniz up front needs service to be effective, and if Villa control the center, Fulham will struggle to generate the sustained pressure they need to get something from this trip.

Head To Head

Our Prediction

The head-to-head record is heavily weighted toward Villa, who have won eight of the last ten meetings with Fulham and lost just two. Emery tends to get a sharp reaction from his squad after poor cup performances, and Villa Park should provide a different atmosphere to a midweek away trip to Bournemouth. Fulham’s two-win season in the league suggests they are not yet consistent enough on the road to take points here, and Villa, despite the 3-0 setback in midweek, look the more likely side to get back on track.
