The 2026/27 season changes the picture. After ten years with Puma, Chivas moved to Nike on 1 July 2026, and the first shirt of that partnership arrived on 16 July. If you are buying a Chivas jersey right now, you are buying into a new era.
Where to buy the Chivas jersey
The current Nike range is sold through the club store and general sports retailers, but North American stock on Chivas is thin. For anything older than the current season, the vintage market is the realistic route: the grid above pulls live from Classic Football Shirts, which carries original shirts from the Puma, adidas, Reebok and Atletica eras in graded condition.
Three things worth knowing before you buy. Mexican club shirts run slimmer than European equivalents, and the player-issue version runs slimmer still. The 2026/27 Nike shirt sells in Mexico for 1,999 MXN in the fan version and 2,999 MXN for the player version, which gives you a reference point if a listing looks unusually cheap. And on the vintage market, each shirt is a single item in one size, graded out of ten for condition, so when it is gone it is gone.
The story behind the red and white stripes
The club was founded on 8 May 1906 as Unión Football Club by Edgar Everaert, a Belgian businessman living in Guadalajara. It played entirely in white. In 1908 Everaert redesigned the shirt along the lines of Club Brugge, his favourite team back home, and the vertical stripes arrived.
A competing account credits the French tricolour, since several early players worked at the Fábricas de Francia department store. Both stories survive because neither has been settled. What is certain is that the club kept a Belgian design long after it built an identity around being the most Mexican team in the country.
The crest dates from 1923 and takes its shape from the arms of the city of Guadalajara. It was modified in 1984 and now carries twelve stars, one for each league title.
The Mexicans-only rule, and how it actually works
Chivas is the only club in Mexico that does not sign foreign players. The policy was adopted in 1943, when the club entered the professional league. Before that it had fielded Spaniards and Belgians, so the frequent claim that no foreigner has played for Guadalajara since 1908 is wrong.
The rule still stands in 2026. Owner Amaury Vergara has publicly reaffirmed it despite pressure from pundits, including Hugo Sánchez, who has argued the club should abandon it.
What has changed is the definition. The rule turns on Mexican nationality, not birthplace, and the club has used that distinction. Goalkeeper Óscar Whalley was born in Zaragoza to an English father and a Spanish-Mexican mother, and signed in June 2023 on the strength of his mother's nationality. The current squad also includes several US-born players of Mexican descent: Daniel Aguirre, Brian Gutiérrez, Richard Ledezma and Efraín Álvarez.
The rule was never abandoned. It was redefined, from born in Mexico to eligible for Mexico. Note that it applies only to players: the current head coach, Gabriel Milito, appointed in May 2026, is Argentine.

The Clausura 2017 title, won 4-3 on aggregate against Tigres, ended more than a decade without a championship. Chivas has not won the league since.

The shirt of the Apertura 2006 title, with Bimbo across the chest. Bofo Bautista scored the decisive goal, Oswaldo Sánchez kept goal, Omar Bravo led the line. It combines a good design with a winning season, which is usually what makes a shirt endure.

Released for the club's hundredth year. The highest-rated Chivas shirt of all, and difficult to find in good condition.
2016/17 anniversary, Puma (4.25 from 331 votes)
Made for the 110th anniversary. A laced retro collar with 110 printed inside the neck, the original C.G. crest on the chest, and a Campeonísimo graphic across the back. Chivas wore it against Arsenal.

The late-nineties classic, from the period when the club was supplied by the Mexican brand Atletica. Genuinely scarce.
The other end of the table is instructive. The 2025/26 home and away shirts scored 2.59 and 2.37, placing them among the four worst-rated in the club's history. Supporters had turned on the Puma era well before it ended.
The 2026/27 Nike shirt
Nike released the home shirt on 16 July 2026 and Chivas presented it officially on 18 July, hours before the Apertura opener against Toluca.
It keeps the five red stripes and adds a buttoned navy polo collar and navy side panels. The collar is the detail supporters noticed: it references the shirts of the Campeonísimo years, the run between 1957 and 1962 when Chivas won five titles in six seasons. Nike also produced a custom wordmark with goat-horn detailing and an exclusive lettering font drawn from Mexican sign painting.
The away shirt landed the same day, white with club logos rendered in a red-to-blue gradient. As of early August 2026 no third shirt has been announced.
One more piece is still circulating: the 120th anniversary shirt, Puma's last Chivas design, released in May 2026 at 4,999 MXN. White, in tribute to the earliest kits, with a large vintage Club Unión crest at the centre, a gold 1906-2026 patch and Rebaño Sagrado printed where the size label would sit.

For a child, the replica is almost always the right call. The authentic cut is built for players and leaves little room to grow.
Names worth putting on the back
Armando González, known as La Hormiga, is the current draw. He scored 12 goals in the Apertura 2025, a total matched by few in the club's history, and was called up for the 2026 World Cup. Roberto Alvarado and goalkeeper Raúl Rangel also went to the tournament.
For a historical shirt, Salvador Reyes is the name. He scored the goal that won the club's first professional title on 3 January 1957, held the scoring record for more than forty years, and his number 8 is retired. Omar Bravo passed his mark in 2015 and now leads with 132 league goals.
One correction worth making, because the shirts are still everywhere: Javier Hernández left Chivas at the end of 2025 and signed for Atlético Dallas in the USL in July 2026. A Chicharito Chivas shirt is a retro purchase now, not a current one.
Sizing and care
Mexican league shirts follow US sizing but cut narrower through the chest and shoulders. If you are between sizes, go up. Youth sizing runs small, particularly in the player version.
Wash cold, inside out, and skip the tumble dryer. Heat is what lifts printed names and numbers. Sponsor logos on recent Nike and Puma shirts are heat-applied rather than stitched, so ironing directly over them will ruin the shirt.
