Club America jersey: where to buy and iconic versions

Chris Yohou Avatar

Club América is the most successful team in Mexican football, the most followed, and comfortably the most disliked. A 2025 survey put support at 21 percent of the population and hostility at 46 percent. The club leaned into it years ago with an unofficial slogan: Ódiame Más, hate me more.

The yellow shirt is the object that carries all of that. Since July 2025 it has been made by adidas, and the 2026/27 home shirt revives a design idea the club last used in the late nineties.

Where to buy the Club América jersey

Fanatics stocks the current adidas range plus previous seasons in youth and adult sizing. The grid above is pulled live from their catalogue, so what you see reflects actual availability.

For reference, the 2026/27 home shirt retails in Mexico at 1,999 MXN for the fan version, 2,999 MXN for the authentic and 1,699 MXN for children. In the United States the replica lists at $100 on adidas.com. Anything dramatically below those numbers is worth a second look.

Why the club is called América, and why it wears yellow

The club was founded on 12 October 1916 from the merger of two school teams. The player Pedro Quintanilla suggested the name because the merger fell on Columbus Day, the day the Americas were discovered.

The colours have a plainer origin. When the founders needed to choose, Rafael Garza Gutiérrez went and fetched a navy pair of his father's trousers and a cream-yellow shirt, and that settled it. The original tone was cream rather than the vivid yellow used today, which is where the nickname azulcrema comes from. The shift to a brighter yellow happened in the 1980s.

The crest began in 1916 as a C overlapped by an A. The map of the Americas was added behind the letters in the mid-1920s, enclosed in a football, and that structure survives. The eagle nickname, Las Águilas, dates from a 1981 Televisa rebrand.

The V, and the 1984 final

The chevron that defines América's eighties shirts came out of a meeting called by director Emilio Díaz Barroso to change the club's image. Carlos Reinoso, who was there, has described spending three or four hours with illustrators before the design emerged. His explanation: the wings of an eagle in flight, and the V of victory. The Águilas nickname was chosen in the same room.

That shirt is tied to the single most important match in the rivalry with Chivas. June 1984 remains the only league final the two clubs have ever contested. América drew 2-2 in Guadalajara, won 3-1 at the Azteca, and took the title 5-3 on aggregate. Héctor Miguel Zelada saved a penalty before half time in the second leg; Alfredo Tena and Javier Aguirre scored.

There is a competing story crediting a calendar given to the club by a Chivas goalkeeper. The historian who reported it says himself that he does not know whether it inspired the shirt, so treat it as folklore.

Club América by the numbers

Founded12 October 1916
Liga MX titles16, a national record (last: Apertura 2024)
Copa MX6, a record
CONCACAF Champions Cup7, a shared record
StadiumEstadio Banorte, formerly Estadio Azteca

Shirt sponsorCaliente (since 2023)
Record scorerZague, 162 league goals

One thing to be clear about, because plenty of listings get it wrong: América is not the reigning champion. The club won three consecutive titles under André Jardine, the Apertura 2023, Clausura 2024 and Apertura 2024, which no team had managed in the short-tournament era. It then lost the Clausura 2025 final to Toluca and went out in the quarter-finals of the Clausura 2026. The last title was December 2024.

Five América shirts collectors actually want

Football Kit Archive ratings, taken on 3 August 2026. The top ten sit within 0.03 of each other, so the ordering matters less than the company.

1994-96 home, adidas (4.28 from 408 votes)

Vivid yellow with a geometric red, blue and black graphic across the shoulders, Coca-Cola on the chest. This is the shirt of the Águilas Africanas, Leo Beenhakker's side built around François Omam-Biyik and Kalusha Bwalya, with Zague, Luis García and a young Cuauhtémoc Blanco. Omam-Biyik scored 33 league goals. They won nothing. The shirt outlived the trophies.

2020/21 third, Nike (4.28 from 771 votes)

The most voted-on shirt in the club's archive. White and black with a graphic built from traditional Aztec art, all logos centred. It descends from the eagle knight shirt Guillermo Ochoa wore in 2008. Do not confuse it with the turquoise Aztec third from January 2020.

1996/97 home, adidas (4.28 from 133 votes)

From the run of shirts with the crest embossed as a watermark into the fabric, navy polo collar, navy shoulder stripes. The design adidas has just brought back.

1983/84 home (4.27 from 115 votes)

The V, with no sponsor, because shirt advertising did not arrive in Mexico until 1988. The Final del Siglo shirt.

2024/25 home and away, Nike (4.26 each)

The shirts of the tricampeonato. The home pushed the yellow to a more saturated tone than the previous decade; the away was blue with a map-of-the-Americas motif.

For contrast, the 2016/17 home scored 2.63 and the Club World Cup shirt from the same year 2.60. The centenary season produced two of the worst-rated shirts in the club's history.

The 2026/27 adidas shirt

Released on 13 July 2026 in Impact Yellow and Legend Ink. The signature element is an oversized crest watermark covering the entire front, taken directly from the 1996-2000 shirts. The crest and the adidas logo sit centred on the chest rather than offset, and the three stripes on the shoulders run black, red, black instead of a single colour.

The shirt carries 1916-2026 and the phrase Grandes de Corazón inside the collar, counting down to the club's 110th anniversary in October. Shorts and socks are navy. The authentic version uses the same CLIMACOOL+ construction adidas supplied at the 2026 World Cup.

The away and third shirts had not been officially released as of early August 2026, though away images have leaked showing a dark grey and black design with a large tonal chevron, a nod to the eighties V.

Authentic, replica or retro

VersionWho it suitsWhat to expect
Authentic (jugador)Playing, close fitCLIMACOOL+, athletic cut, 2,999 MXN
Replica (aficionado)Everyday wearRoomier, hard-wearing, 1,999 MXN
RetroCollectorsNineties adidas shirts are the ones that hold value

A detail adidas has been criticised for: on the authentic shorts the side stripes mix wide and narrow, while the replica uses uniform wide stripes. The replica arguably matches the shirt better.

Names worth putting on the back

The summer of 2026 thinned out the obvious choices. Álvaro Fidalgo left for Real Betis in February, Jonathan dos Santos retired in June, Néstor Araujo departed in July.

Alejandro Zendejas is the strongest option for an English-speaking buyer: he played for the United States at the 2026 World Cup and carries appeal on both sides of the border. Henry Martín remains captain and the emblem of the three-title run, though he asked to leave in late July and the club refused. Israel Reyes was the only América player called up by Mexico for the World Cup. Raphael Veiga, signed from Palmeiras in February 2026, wears the number 10.

adidas itself promotes Martín, Zendejas and Reyes as its América athletes, which tells you where the commercial weight sits.

For a historical shirt, Cuauhtémoc Blanco is the name most often called the club's greatest. Zague holds the scoring record at 162 league goals. Moisés Muñoz has a claim of his own: his stoppage-time equaliser in the 2013 final against Cruz Azul is among the most replayed moments in Mexican football.

Sizing and care

adidas Mexican club shirts follow standard adidas sizing, which runs slightly slimmer than Nike equivalents through the body. The authentic version is cut for players and is noticeably tighter. Children's sizing is generous by comparison.

Cold wash, inside out, no dryer, and never iron over the sponsor or crest. The 2026/27 crest is a raised 3D application and heat will deform it.
