CF Montreal host LA Galaxy looking to build on Columbus upset

Chris Yohou Avatar

Three days after stunning Columbus Crew 2-1 on the road, CF Montreal return to Saputo Stadium with some momentum but a long climb ahead of them. Sitting 14th in the Eastern Conference on 20 points, interim coach Philippe Eullaffroy’s side are five points below the ninth and final playoff spot. Los Angeles Galaxy arrive on the back of a 1-0 win over San Jose Earthquakes, their own playoff push in the Western Conference running up against a similar problem: sitting 10th with 25 points, they sit two points outside the top nine in a tightly packed standings.

What’s at stake

The Eastern Conference playoff picture is tight from sixth to 14th, and Montreal are sitting right in the thick of it. With 20 points from 20 games, they are level with Columbus Crew and Philadelphia Union below them, while DC United in ninth have 24 points. That is a four-point gap to a playoff berth, which is closing but far from comfortable. The nine Eastern Conference spots MLS makes available mean Montreal cannot afford to keep dropping points against mid-table opposition. Galaxy, meanwhile, are 10th in the Western Conference on 25 points, two points outside Portland Timbers in ninth. Greg Vanney’s side have played 21 games, one more than several rivals, which adds a quiet urgency to every road trip.

A Montreal win would close the gap to DC United to one point and breathe real life into their postseason hopes. For Galaxy, dropping points away against a side below them in the Western standings would complicate their own playoff math at a point when the Western Conference logjam offers very little wiggle room. A Galaxy win keeps the pressure off Vanney and maintains the gap to the top nine as something potentially manageable in the weeks ahead.

How they got here

Montreal’s last five reads W-D-D-L-L, with the wins and draws sandwiched around a difficult July stretch that included losses to Nashville SC and Inter Miami. The win at Columbus was the first away victory that looked genuinely convincing, and it followed back-to-back home draws against DC United and New England Revolution. That inconsistency has been the story of Montreal’s season: 5 wins, 5 draws, and 10 losses in 20 games, with 37 goals conceded pointing to defensive frailty that opposing coaches continue to target. Galaxy’s recent form tells a similar story. Their last five reads W-L-D-D-L, with the win over San Jose sandwiched around a road loss at Houston and two successive draws. A 3-1 home defeat to St. Louis City in late July was damaging, and the Galaxy have not strung two wins together since.

Montreal sit 14th in the Eastern Conference with 20 points from 20 games. Nashville SC lead the East on 46 points, making any title conversation irrelevant at this stage, but the playoff race is very much alive. Galaxy are 10th in the Western Conference on 25 points from 21 games, trailing Portland Timbers in ninth by two points. The congestion in both standings means a single result this weekend could shift several teams’ positions.

Key battle to watch

Montreal’s defensive record, 37 goals conceded in 20 games, is one of the worst in the Eastern Conference, and Galaxy carry attacking options capable of exploiting that. Hirving Lozano and John Paintsil offer pace and directness from wide areas, while Marco Reus and Sergi Roberto can find pockets between the lines. How Eullaffroy organizes his midfield line to limit those central spaces will be the defining tactical question. If Montreal can win the physical battle in midfield and keep Galaxy’s wide attackers from running at a retreating back line, they have the counter-attacking tools, as shown at Columbus, to hurt a Galaxy defense that has conceded 30 goals itself this season.

Standings

Head To Head

Our Prediction

The head-to-head record heavily favors Galaxy, who have won five of the last nine meetings and handed Montreal a 4-0 defeat the last time they played in 2022. Galaxy’s attacking quality gives them an edge against a Montreal defense that has leaked freely all season. That said, Montreal showed at Columbus that they can be dangerous on the break when energized by home support, and Eullaffroy will have his side set up to take advantage of any Galaxy complacency on the road. Expect a close game decided by a single moment, with Galaxy better placed to produce it.
