Liverpool open a new Premier League era at Newcastle

Chris Yohou Avatar

Andoni Iraola’s Liverpool arrive at St. James’ Park on August 23 carrying a head-to-head record that tells a lopsided story: eight wins from the last ten meetings between these two clubs, including a 4-1 thrashing of Newcastle just seven months ago. Matthias Jaissle’s side know exactly what they are up against as they open their Premier League campaign at home. Pre-season gave neither team much to shout about, but competitive football has a way of resetting the picture fast.

Newcastle vs Liverpool

What’s at stake

This is Matchday 1 of the 2026-27 Premier League season, so there is no points gap to close and no zone to escape. What opening-day fixtures do carry, though, is psychological weight. Liverpool begin ranked sixth in the pre-season table and sit outside the top four on paper, while Newcastle open at ninth. The top four earn Champions League spots and the top eight secure European football of some kind, so both clubs will want their campaigns to start positively rather than spend the first weeks clawing back from an early deficit.

A Liverpool win would reinforce the pattern that has defined this fixture recently and give Iraola a statement result in his first competitive game in charge. For Newcastle and Jaissle, a home win against one of the division’s traditional heavyweights would immediately signal that the Magpies intend to push up that table. A defeat here is not a crisis at Matchday 1, but losing to a side that has beaten you in each of the last three Premier League meetings would raise questions early.

How they got here

Newcastle’s pre-season was bumpy. They lost to Bayer Leverkusen and Everton at home, were beaten heavily by Bristol City away, and could only draw 1-1 with Strasbourg last week. The one bright spot was a 2-1 win at Valencia in early August. Liverpool had their own wobbles: back-to-back losses to Monaco and Leeds in the Premier League Summer Series, sandwiched either side of wins over Wrexham and Sunderland. Their final warm-up was a goalless draw with Como. Friendly results rarely translate directly, but neither squad arrives here looking settled.

Both clubs enter on zero points, so the league table is blank. Context from last season’s head-to-head tells the real story: Liverpool beat Newcastle 4-1 in January and 2-0 in a separate Premier League meeting, while Newcastle’s only recent positive came in the League Cup in March 2025, a 2-1 win at Anfield. The Magpies drew 3-3 at home to Liverpool in December 2024, suggesting they can live with this opposition at St. James’ Park even when results on the road have been harder to come by.

Key battle to watch

The central midfield contest will likely decide the tempo of the game. Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch have operated as the engine of the Reds’ press in recent seasons, and Iraola’s system demands that his midfielders win the ball high. Newcastle’s Joelinton and Lewis Miley will need to manage that pressure while also feeding wide attackers like Anthony Elanga and Harvey Barnes. If Jaissle’s midfield can absorb the press and release the ball quickly into wide areas, Newcastle have the tools to threaten. If Liverpool’s engine gets on top, the visitors’ technical quality in the final third, with Florian Wirtz now in the squad, could prove difficult to contain.

Head To Head

Our Prediction

History points firmly toward Liverpool, who have lost just once in their last ten meetings with Newcastle and dismantled them twice in the second half of last season. That said, St. James’ Park is a genuine test even for elite away sides, and Newcastle’s draw in December 2024 showed they can make life uncomfortable at home. Expect a competitive first half, but Liverpool’s quality in the final third should prove the difference over ninety minutes.
