Chelsea could take advantage of the final days of the transfer window to solve a problem that has plagued the club for several seasons: the goalkeeper position. While Robert Sánchez remains the No. 1, the Blues have recently made contact with Emiliano Martínez’s representatives. The possibility appeared almost out of nowhere, but it makes perfect sense given the difficulties Sánchez has experienced.
Chelsea’s interest comes primarily after Sánchez’s performance against Fulham. Despite a 3-2 victory to launch Xabi Alonso’s Premier League era, the Spanish goalkeeper made several mistakes, including two that directly led to avoidable goals. It was another performance that raised questions about a player who has regularly been criticized since arriving at Stamford Bridge in 2023.
For Chelsea, the problem goes beyond the Fulham game. The club has gone through a long run of matches without a clean sheet and has struggled for several seasons to establish a truly reliable goalkeeper. Sánchez does possess certain qualities, particularly with his interventions and distribution, but his inconsistency and mistakes in important moments represent a significant weakness for a team aiming to return to the top of the Premier League.
In this context, Emiliano Martínez appears to be a particularly attractive solution. At 33, the Argentine possesses a level of experience that few goalkeepers currently available on the market can match. A World Cup winner with Argentina in 2022, a 2026 World Cup finalist, a two-time Yashin Trophy winner and a Europa League winner with Aston Villa, Martínez has accumulated experience at the highest level.
Martinez can bring security
His profile especially matches what Chelsea appears to be missing right now: personality and consistency in high-pressure moments. Martínez is a goalkeeper who is not afraid to take responsibility, command his defense and establish a genuine presence inside his penalty area. His international experience and performances in major games could give the Blues an immediate sense of security.
The Argentine also knows the Premier League extremely well. He joined Aston Villa in 2020 after leaving Arsenal and has made 256 appearances in the competition, gradually establishing himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the league. His adaptation to Chelsea would therefore not represent the same gamble as signing a young foreign goalkeeper discovering English soccer for the first time.
The opportunity is even more interesting because Martínez himself finds his future at Aston Villa uncertain. The club signed Zion Suzuki from Parma for nearly £30 million, while the Argentine’s proposed move to Juventus ultimately collapsed. Martínez wants to leave Birmingham, and Villa now appears willing to listen to offers. Chelsea could therefore take advantage of particularly favorable circumstances to sign a goalkeeper of the highest level.
For Xabi Alonso, Martínez’s arrival could also have an important impact on the internal competition. Chelsea already has Mike Penders, who is considered a potential No. 1 for the future. The Belgian, only 21 years old, is returning from a successful loan spell at Strasbourg and represents more of a long-term solution. Signing Martínez would therefore allow the Blues to avoid rushing his development while immediately having an experienced goalkeeper available.
Of course, the move also comes with questions. Martínez is 33, and his contract with Aston Villa runs until 2029. Chelsea would therefore be investing in a player whose sporting value is primarily immediate rather than in someone likely to represent the future of the club. His recent fitness problems, particularly a hand injury mentioned during the collapse of his proposed Juventus transfer, are also worth monitoring.
But in Chelsea’s current situation, those concerns appear secondary. The Blues have an extremely young squad and need players capable of providing experience in decisive moments. Martínez could fill exactly that role. His personality, experience and level of performance could provide valuable stability to a defense that remains too fragile.
Chelsea cannot afford to let such an opportunity pass. As the club looks to build a new project under Xabi Alonso, the goalkeeper position appears to be one of the final major question marks within the squad. The arrival of the Argentine World Cup winner would obviously not solve all of the Blues’ defensive problems, but it could eliminate a weakness that has become far too recurring.
In the short term, Martínez would primarily offer a higher level of security than Chelsea currently has. In the long term, Mike Penders would remain an option to eventually take over. Between the two, choosing the Argentine could therefore represent a particularly logical compromise: an experienced goalkeeper to immediately stabilize the team while giving the young Belgian time to prepare to become tomorrow’s No. 1.
In a transfer window where Chelsea has already invested heavily, Emiliano Martínez’s arrival would therefore feel different: it would not simply be another signing, but a direct response to a problem that has been identified for several years. And after Robert Sánchez’s first mistakes under Xabi Alonso, the timing could hardly be more telling.
