Juventus host Parma looking to build on winning start under Spalletti

Chris Yohou Avatar

Luciano Spalletti got his Juventus tenure off to the right start last weekend, with a 1-0 win away at Frosinone putting three points on the board before the Allianz Stadium has even hosted a competitive game this season. Parma arrive in Turin having lost by the same scoreline at home to Cagliari, leaving them pointless and 15th after one round. The head-to-head record is firmly in Juventus’s favor, with the Turin side winning seven of the last ten meetings. Saturday’s fixture is a chance for both clubs to either cement early momentum or begin a recovery.

What’s at stake

After just one matchday, the Serie A table offers little more than a snapshot, but the picture is already interesting at the top and bottom. Roma, Inter, Napoli, Lecce and AC Milan all picked up wins in Round 1, and Juventus, on three points after one game, are level on points with those sides and only separated by goal difference. A second straight win would keep Spalletti’s side in and around the early European positions as the table begins to take shape.

For Parma, the math is simple at this stage: three points would pull them level with much of the table and erase the negative first impression of a home defeat to Cagliari. A second loss, though, would leave them in the bottom half with a difficult points gap to close on the nine qualification places for European competition, even if there are 36 matches still to play after this one.

Juventus vs Parma - Juventus

How they got here

Juventus opened their league campaign with a 1-0 victory away at Frosinone, a clean sheet and a winning result that Spalletti would have been satisfied with as competitive football resumes. Before that, Juve went 3-1 in friendlies, beating Chelsea and Palermo but losing to Inter. Parma’s preparation told a different story: two draws in pre-season against lower-opposition, a 2-0 friendly loss to Sampdoria, then a Coppa Italia win over Catania before dropping all three points at home to Cagliari on Matchday 1.

Juventus sit eighth in Serie A with three points from one game, sharing that tally with seven other sides. Parma are 15th, one of several clubs yet to register a point. The gap between them is currently three points, which is the full difference between a winning start and a losing one.

Key battle to watch

Spalletti’s deployment of Kenan Yildiz and Francisco Conceicao in the attacking third will be the focal point. Parma’s young defensive unit, led by the likes of Enrico Del Prato and Lautaro Valenti, was breached by Cagliari last weekend despite playing at home. Juve’s forwards, now operating inside a system Spalletti has had a full preseason to install, will be looking to expose any remaining uncertainty in that back line. How Parma’s midfield, built around Adrián Bernabé and Hernani Nicolussi, tracks runners from depth will likely decide whether the visitors can stay compact and competitive for 90 minutes.

Head To Head

Our Prediction

The head-to-head record, home advantage and the contrast in opening-weekend performances all point toward a Juventus win. Parma showed enough defensive frailty against Cagliari to suggest Juve’s attack will find openings, and Spalletti will want a performance at the Allianz Stadium that reflects his system more fully than a 1-0 on the road did. Parma have the quality to make it difficult, but getting a positive result in Turin on the back of a home loss would require a significant step up.
