Simeone’s side need a bounce-back as United arrive in Madrid

Chris Yohou Avatar

Three days after a 2-1 win at Alaves that kept their La Liga momentum rolling, Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid return to the Riyadh Air Metropolitano facing a very different kind of test. Their Champions League campaign opened with a 1-2 home defeat to Liverpool in matchday 1, leaving them without a point in the league stage. Manchester United, by contrast, picked up three points from their opener against Sabah FA and arrive in better shape on the European ledger, even if a 1-1 draw at home to Tottenham last weekend took some of the shine off their Premier League form. Tuesday night is effectively a first-chance-to-respond fixture for Atletico, and a first real test of United’s continental credentials.

Match action

What’s at stake

The UEFA Champions League league stage sends 24 of the 36 clubs into the knockout rounds, so the margin for a slow start is wider than in the old group format. With that said, Atletico’s defeat to Liverpool means another loss here would pile early pressure on their campaign and force them to rely on results elsewhere simply to stay in the top half of the standings. For a club of Atletico’s stature, sitting without a point through two matchdays is not a comfortable place to be.

For United, three points would consolidate a strong opening and give Michael Carrick’s side breathing room before the fixture list tightens. A defeat, on the other hand, would drag them back into the pack of clubs scrapping for position in the lower half of the qualifying places, and raise fresh questions about their performances in the competitions that matter most, given back-to-back Premier League draws against Fulham and Tottenham.

How they got here

Atletico come into this fixture in genuinely good domestic form. Four wins from their last five across all competitions before tonight, including a 4-0 dismantling of Osasuna, a 3-0 away win at Real Sociedad and, most tellingly, a 2-1 home win over Real Madrid in September. The one blemish was that Champions League opener against Liverpool. In Europe, though, the Metropolitano has not been the fortress Simeone needs it to be right now. United’s recent run is patchier: a League Cup loss to Brighton, a Premier League defeat to Manchester City, two draws, and then the comfortable 4-0 win over Sabah FA to open their UCL account.

United began their Champions League campaign with three points from their opening game. Atletico are on zero after one match. Both teams have played only one game in the league stage, so the picture is still forming, but the direction of travel in Europe points in opposite directions heading into matchday 2.

Key battle to watch

Atletico’s attacking depth is the most intriguing subplot here. Simeone has Jonathan David, Adrien Sorloth, Jonathan Alvarez and Ademola Lookman to call on, while Alex Baena and Lee Kang-In provide creativity in midfield. United’s defensive unit, anchored by Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire, will be tested by that variety. The bigger tactical question is whether United can use the press to disrupt Atletico in the first twenty minutes, or whether Simeone’s side absorb the early momentum and hit on the counter, which is still the formula the Argentine coach returns to when the stakes are high at the Metropolitano.

Our Prediction

Atletico’s domestic form gives them real confidence and the Metropolitano crowd will push them from the first whistle. United’s midfield, however, has looked unsettled across their recent Premier League outings, and Atletico’s forward line carries genuine quality. Expect a tight, low-scoring affair where Simeone’s defensive discipline keeps United at arm’s length, but Atletico’s sharpness on the break gives them the edge to collect a first three points in this year’s competition.
