San Jose must prove their Portland win wasn’t a flash in the pan against Colorado

Chris Yohou Avatar

Thirteen days ago, San Jose Earthquakes put three past Portland Timbers without reply in the second half, walking away 3-1 winners to keep themselves firmly in the Western Conference’s upper tier. That result looked like a statement. Now comes the test of whether it was. Bruce Arena’s side travel to Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Saturday knowing that Houston Dynamo, sitting just one point behind them in fifth, can pull level or overtake with a win of their own this round. Fourth place in the West is still very much a fight, and Colorado Rapids, hovering in eighth, have every reason to make life difficult.

Match action

What’s at stake

San Jose sit fourth in the Western Conference on 45 points after 27 games, five points behind third-placed FC Dallas and just one clear of Houston Dynamo in fifth. The top nine in the West qualify for the MLS playoffs, so the Earthquakes are not fighting for their postseason lives, but the difference between fourth and the lower seeds is meaningful: teams finishing in the top seven enter at the round-of-eight stage, while eighth and ninth drop into a round-of-sixteen play-in. A win keeps San Jose comfortably in the top half of the playoff bracket picture; a slip could see Houston leapfrog them before the weekend is out.

For Colorado, the math is less nuanced but still real. They sit eighth on 36 points, level on points with ninth-place Los Angeles Galaxy, who have played one more game. The Rapids are inside the playoff picture but only just, and the teams below them are closing in. Portland Timbers, Real Salt Lake, and San Diego are all on 32 points with games in hand. Colorado cannot afford to give points away at home, and a victory over a genuine top-four side would go a long way toward steadying their position and jumping up the table.

How they got here

They drew 3-3 at home to Seattle Sounders, then lost 2-3 away at Los Angeles Galaxy in their last league outing. They did beat CF Montreal 1-0 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in mid-September, and a 1-1 draw in Austin was a point earned on the road, but the overall picture under Matt Wells is one of a team that concedes too freely. They have shipped 38 goals in 27 games, giving them a flat goal difference that reflects the inconsistency. San Jose, by contrast, have gone WDWWD across their last five league matches, picking up 13 points from a possible 15 to sit fourth in the Western Conference standings. The 3-1 win over Portland followed victories over Houston Dynamo and at San Diego, with only a 2-2 home draw against Los Angeles FC breaking the run. Arena’s side have scored 49 goals this season, the most productive attack in this Western Conference bracket.

In the table, San Jose are fourth on 45 points, five back from third-place FC Dallas and level on games played. Colorado are eighth on 36 points, nine points adrift of the Earthquakes but with that playoff spot still secured for now. The Rapids have won 11, drawn 3, and lost 13 this season, a record that undersells how tight their position actually is.

Key battle to watch

The central contest worth tracking is how Colorado’s midfield handles San Jose’s rhythm in transition. The Earthquakes have been effective this season at recycling possession quickly through midfielders like Ian Harkes and turning defensive moments into fast attacks, which is partly why their goals-for tally of 49 leads the group. Colorado have struggled to maintain shape when opponents play at pace, as the 3-3 against Seattle and the 2-3 loss in Los Angeles both showed. If Matt Wells can get his team compact and organized between the lines, Colorado have the home crowd advantage and the motivation to grind out a result. If San Jose find space to run in behind, the Rapids’ defensive record suggests that space will be exploited.

Our Prediction

San Jose come in with better form, a sharper attack, and something concrete to play for at the top end of the table, which tends to focus minds. Colorado at home are a different proposition than on the road, and their head-to-head record at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park gives them reason for confidence, but the Rapids have looked exposed defensively in recent weeks. A San Jose win is the more likely outcome, though Colorado’s home form and the pressure on both sides to get points makes a close game the most probable shape of the evening.
