Jhon Arias books Colombia’s last-16 spot with early strike against Ghana

Chris Yohou Avatar

Jhon Arias put Colombia through to the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup with a 14th-minute goal that proved just enough to see off Ghana at Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City. The final score of 1-0 flatters Ghana only slightly: Colombia generated an xG of 2.18 across 20 shots, while the Black Stars managed just eight attempts and failed to register a single shot on target. It was a controlled if not always clean performance from Nestor Lorenzo’s side, who progress as deserved winners.

Jhon Arias goal sends Colombia into last 16 as Ghana bow out of World Cup

Key Moments

  • 8′, Early blow for Colombia as Jhon Cordoba is forced off in the eighth minute, bringing a substitution before the match had properly settled.
  • 12′, Jhon Arias is booked for tripping, putting himself on a tightrope just two minutes before he would score.
  • 14′, Arias makes instant amends, finishing to give Colombia the lead. The goal stands as the only one of the game.
  • 56′, Luis Diaz has what appears to be a second Colombia goal ruled out by VAR for offside, keeping the margin at one.
  • 62′, Ghana introduce Iñaki Williams and Kwasi Sibo in a double substitution as Carlos Queiroz looks to change the shape and find a way through.
  • 73′, Arias, already on a yellow card, is withdrawn to protect Colombia’s lead and avoid the risk of a red.

Tactical Breakdown

Colombia’s 4-3-3 gave them complete control of the midfield. They finished with 61 percent possession, 586 total passes at a 91 percent accuracy rate, and 12 of their 20 shots came from inside the box. An xG of 2.18 tells you they were not just sitting on the lead; they kept pressing for a second that never arrived. Ghana’s goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi made seven saves and was comfortably the busiest player on the pitch.

The disallowed Luis Diaz goal in the 56th minute was the clearest turning point in terms of momentum. Had it stood, Colombia would have been able to manage the game more comfortably. Instead, Ghana had reason to believe, and Queiroz pushed Williams and Sibo on in the 62nd minute to chase an equalizer. The switch gave Ghana more presence in the final third but they still could not test Camilo Vargas, who was not called upon to make a single save all game.

Ghana’s 4-1-4-1 struggled from the first whistle. Thomas Partey in the single pivot was asked to do too much against a Colombia midfield trio that circulated the ball quickly and forced the Black Stars into repeated fouling, picking up three yellow cards in the process. Ghana managed just two shots from inside the box across 90 minutes, an xG of 0.26, and never looked capable of finding a way past a well-organized Colombia backline.

Player Ratings

Jhon Arias
8.0/10. Scored what turned out to be the decisive goal just two minutes after being booked, a composed finish under pressure, and worked hard until his careful withdrawal in the 73rd minute.
Luis Diaz
7.0/10. Lively throughout and unlucky to have a goal ruled out by VAR for offside; caused Ghana problems consistently before being replaced late.
James Rodriguez
6.5/10. Came on at halftime and added creativity to Colombia’s second-half buildup, keeping Ghana’s midfield honest without ever finding the killer pass.
Lawrence Ati Zigi
8.0/10. Ghana’s best performer by some distance, making seven saves to limit the damage and keep his side in the contest far longer than the stats suggested they deserved.
Thomas Partey
5.0/10. Overwhelmed in the pivot against a compact Colombia midfield; spent much of the match firefighting rather than building.

Head to Head

Verdict

Colombia advance to the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup, where they will face a more demanding test than Ghana provided. Lorenzo’s team did the basics right and punished Ghana early, which ultimately was all they needed. Ghana, beaten and goalless, exit a World Cup that offered more promise in the buildup than it delivered on the pitch.
