Columbus Crew carry four-game winning run into home date with struggling DC United

Chris Yohou Avatar

Two days after a clean 2-0 win at FC Dallas, Columbus Crew return to ScottsMiracle-Gro Field with genuine confidence behind them. That result extended their league winning run to four games and left them ninth in the Eastern Conference on 41 points, sitting inside the playoff places with the regular season closing in. DC United arrive in very different shape, having just lost 1-2 at Toronto FC, their fourth consecutive defeat in all competitions. The contrast in form between these two Eastern Conference sides sets up a match with real stakes at the bottom half of the table.

Match action

What’s at stake

The Eastern Conference sends nine teams to the playoffs, and Columbus Crew currently sit in that ninth spot on 41 points, two clear of New York Red Bulls and Toronto FC in tenth and eleventh. With the table still congested between positions nine and twelve, holding that spot requires points, and a home win against a side already eight points back would be a significant step toward locking in postseason soccer. DC United are thirteenth on 33 points, eight adrift of ninth place, with no description of a playoff place next to their name in the standings.

For Columbus, a win would push their points tally to 44 and put further daylight between them and the sides chasing that final playoff berth. For DC United, a defeat would move them ten points back of the playoff line with the season winding down, making their postseason picture extremely difficult to resolve. René Weiler’s side needs results, and they need them quickly, but four straight losses heading into this fixture is not the platform from which to build a comeback.

How they got here

Columbus have been the form team in this matchup by a wide margin. Their last five competitive results read W-W-D-W-W, with the only blemish a 0-0 draw against St. Louis City in the US Open Cup. In the league specifically, they have won four straight: 3-1 over Charlotte, 2-0 at FC Cincinnati, 4-2 over Toronto FC at home, and then 2-0 at FC Dallas last Thursday. Interim coach Laurent Courtois has his side playing with a clear identity, and the goals are coming from multiple sources. DC United, by contrast, have lost four in a row coming into this one, shipping nine goals across those defeats. Their only positive result in five was a 2-1 home win over New York Red Bulls.

Columbus sit ninth in the Eastern Conference on 41 points. DC United are thirteenth on 33, a gap of eight points. The top three in the East, Nashville SC (71 points), New England Revolution (58), and Inter Miami (56), are in a separate conversation entirely. The battle for Columbus is about maintaining position, not chasing those sides. For DC United, the math is getting harder with every passing round.

Key battle to watch

DC United’s defensive record is a liability going into this match. They have conceded 57 goals in 32 games, a number that puts real pressure on keeper Alex Bono and the back line in front of him. Columbus have scored 52 goals at the other end and have been finding the net freely during this winning run, including four against Toronto and two in each of the wins at Cincinnati and Dallas. The key tactical question is whether DC United’s defensive shape, which has been repeatedly exposed during their losing streak, can handle the movement and volume of Columbus’s attack at home. If Brais Mendez and the midfield can circulate the ball quickly and stretch DC’s lines, the visitors could face a difficult evening.

Head To Head

Our Prediction

Columbus Crew have far too much momentum and too much structure right now for a DC United side shipping goals and losing games in batches. Interim coach Laurent Courtois has found a winning formula, the home crowd at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field will be energized after the Dallas result, and the head-to-head record heavily favors the Crew. Expect Columbus to control this one and collect three points that help them hold their playoff position through the final stretch of the regular season.
