Lyon Remind Marseille’s Doubts

Pavel Sulc’s powerful joy after Balerdi’s own goal

Wrapping up matchday 3 of the French League of soccer, Lyon defeated Marseille in the famous “Olympico”

In the midst of a disastrous summer marked by financial troubles and the forced sale of star striker Georges Mikautadze, Lyon found some breathing room on the pitch by edging their Olympian rival thanks to an own goal from the unfortunate Leonardo Balerdi in the 88th minute.

Just like last year, Lyon benefited from a numerical advantage after CJ Egan-Riley was shown a straight red card for bringing down the lively Malick Fofana as the last defender. Mirroring last season’s script, Lyon snatched a deserved victory, capping off a dream August with a perfect record of three wins from three games.

On the Marseille side, early-season doubts only deepened, epitomized by the English defender’s dismissal that once again highlighted the fragility of their back line. It’s a painful defeat that could sting even more with two weeks of international break ahead.
