Long considered one of the faces of Chelsea’s project, Enzo Fernández found himself at the center of a genuine transfer saga during the summer of 2026. Between his comments about Real Madrid, his exclusion from the team in the spring and, now, interest from Manchester City, the Argentine midfielder’s future has fueled tensions around Stamford Bridge. While Chelsea had set a very clear deadline for potential suitors, no agreement was ultimately reached before the August 14 deadline. Even so, the situation is far from completely resolved.
A turbulent end of the season
Just a few months earlier, the idea of Enzo Fernández leaving Chelsea still seemed difficult to imagine. Arriving at the club in January 2023 for a then-record fee, the Argentine had gradually established himself as one of the key players in Chelsea’s midfield. But in the spring, his situation began to deteriorate. The player’s comments regarding his future and his reported interest in Real Madrid prompted a particularly strong response from Chelsea.
In April, Liam Rosenior decided to leave his vice-captain out of the squad for two matches, believing that Fernández had “crossed a line” with his comments about his future. The midfielder was set to miss the FA Cup quarterfinal against Port Vale as well as the Premier League meeting with Manchester City.
The punishment was above all a sign of a deeper issue. Fernández had publicly discussed his interest in Real Madrid while still under contract with Chelsea until 2032. The player subsequently apologized to the club and his manager, temporarily calming the situation. Rosenior then said he hoped the Argentine would remain a major part of the squad, while acknowledging that some issues still needed to be resolved.
What initially appeared to be nothing more than internal tension would ultimately take on an entirely different dimension a few months later. Because while Chelsea was trying to move on, the transfer market would provide Fernández with another possible way out.
Manchester City enters the picture
Manchester City’s interest changed the nature of the situation. The Manchester club, now managed by Enzo Maresca, the former Chelsea manager, began looking at Fernández in the event of Rodri leaving for Barcelona. The two situations thus became closely connected: if the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner were to leave Manchester, City would need a new midfielder capable of playing a central role in its system. Fernández quickly emerged as one of the leading options.
The situation accelerated when Barcelona made several offers for Rodri. Manchester City reportedly rejected a proposal worth around €60 million, while the English club was said to be demanding more before considering the departure of its Spanish midfielder. In that context, Fernández naturally became a priority target for Maresca, who knows his qualities perfectly well after coaching him at Chelsea.
But Chelsea had no intention of making negotiations easy. The London club quickly set its price: £120 million, or around €140 million. More importantly, the Blues imposed a particularly strict deadline on any potential suitors. Any offer had to reach the club before 5 p.m. UK time on Friday, August 14. Otherwise, Fernández would remain at Chelsea for the 2026-27 season.
This position was also dictated by the player’s contractual situation. Fernández still has several years remaining on his contract, and Chelsea had no obligation to sell. The club could therefore afford to wait for an exceptional offer rather than give in to market pressure. After investing more than €100 million to sign him in 2023, the Blues certainly did not want to sell their midfielder for less than his value.
Situation still remains under watch
Friday, August 14 was therefore expected to be the climax of the saga. Yet at 5 p.m., no offer from Manchester City had arrived at Chelsea. The Manchester club failed — or chose not — to meet the Londoners’ financial demands. Chelsea therefore now considers Fernández likely to remain at the club for the upcoming season.
The absence of an offer does not necessarily mean the definitive end of the situation. The transfer window remains open, and Manchester City could theoretically return with a proposal that meets Chelsea’s demands. The possibility of Rodri moving to Barcelona remains a particularly important factor that could reignite negotiations. Until the Spanish international has definitively left Manchester, the equation surrounding Fernández will therefore remain particularly complicated.
For now, however, the most likely scenario is Fernández returning to everyday life at Chelsea. The Argentine midfielder has already returned to Stamford Bridge for a preseason match against Real Sociedad. His second-half appearance was met with a mixed reception: some supporters booed him while others chanted his name. The reaction perfectly illustrates the current state of the relationship between the player and part of the London fan base.
The paradox is therefore striking. Just a few months after being disciplined for discussing his future, Fernández has found himself at the center of another transfer saga, this time fueled by interest from a direct rival. Chelsea has clearly laid out its conditions and, without a £120 million offer, intends to keep its midfielder. Manchester City did not meet the deadline, but the situation could still experience further twists before the transfer window closes.
One thing is certain: even though Enzo Fernández now appears likely to remain at Chelsea, his future has never seemed more uncertain.
