Vancouver Whitecaps ride 5-1 wave into Montreal with Western lead to protect

Chris Yohou Avatar

Six days after dismantling the Seattle Sounders 5-1 at home, Vancouver Whitecaps travel to Saputo Stadium riding as much momentum as any team in MLS right now. That result extended their lead at the top of the Western Conference to 61 points after 33 matches, a commanding position that few clubs in either conference can match. CF Montreal, meanwhile, sit 15th in the Eastern Conference on just 26 points, making Saturday’s matchup a sharp contrast in circumstance as the regular season heads toward its final fixture.

CF Montreal vs Vancouver Whitecaps

What’s at stake

Vancouver Whitecaps sit first in the Western Conference with 61 points from 33 games, six clear of second-placed FC Dallas on 55. Their playoff berth is long confirmed and their seeding for the postseason is the real remaining question. A win in Montreal would reinforce their position at the summit and give them the best possible seed heading into the first round of the playoffs. The Western Conference sends nine teams to the postseason, and the Whitecaps have already locked up one of those spots, with the top six entering at the 1/8-final stage.

For CF Montreal, the picture is entirely different. Bottom of the Eastern Conference on 26 points, they are 17 points adrift of the final playoff place with one game to play. The regular season is over in every meaningful sense for interim head coach Philippe Eullaffroy’s side. For Vancouver, the motivation is seeding and form; for Montreal, it is dignity and the chance to send their home support off on a positive note.

How they got here

Vancouver’s last five MLS matches read W-W-L-W-D (most recent first, excluding Round 34). That blip was a 1-0 defeat at Colorado Rapids in late October, sandwiched between back-to-back home wins: 4-1 against San Diego and then the 5-1 rout of Seattle. The Whitecaps have scored 72 goals in the Western Conference this season and conceded just 34, a goal difference that sets them apart from every other side in their conference. Montreal’s last five competitive outings, by contrast, tell a story of a club that ran out of steam long before the finish line: a draw at New York City FC, a 4-0 loss at Charlotte, a 2-0 home defeat to Nashville SC, a draw in the Canadian Championship against Forge, and a draw at Seattle.

Montreal are 15th in the Eastern Conference on 26 points from 33 games, six behind 14th-placed DC United and 17 behind the final playoff spot. Vancouver top the Western Conference, 6 points clear of FC Dallas in second.

Key battle to watch

Vancouver forward B. White has 20 league goals this season, third in MLS behind Lionel Messi (26) and P. Musa (22). With the Whitecaps already through, there is a reasonable chance head coach Axel Schuster rotates parts of his squad, but White will be eager to add to his tally against a Montreal side that has conceded 67 goals in 33 Eastern Conference matches. How Philippe Eullaffroy sets up defensively against a Whitecaps attack that just put five past Seattle will be the key tactical question at Saputo Stadium.

Standings

Head To Head

Our Prediction

Vancouver have the firepower and the form to take something from this game, and with B. White chasing a 21-goal season, the Whitecaps look well-placed to extend their strong run. Montreal have shown little in recent weeks to suggest they can contain one of the most productive attacks in MLS this season. Expect Vancouver to control large portions of the match, though Schuster may manage minutes with one eye on the playoffs.
