FRANKFURT AM MAIN, GERMANY – OCTOBER 22: Hugo Ekitike of Liverpool celebrates scoring his team’s first goal and apologises to fans of his former club, during the UEFA Champions League 2025/26 League Phase MD3 match between Eintracht Frankfurt and Liverpool FC at Frankfurt Stadion on October 22, 2025 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Two shaky defenses, a fallen giant in search of itself, and a home side prone to chaotic matches — all the ingredients were there for a wild night. In the end, Liverpool’s attack came to life while Frankfurt’s defense fell apart, ending in a 5–1 thrashing.

Seventy-two years later, was Liverpool about to lose for the fifth straight time? It certainly looked possible given the Merseyside club’s recent struggles — too many changes, key players out of form, and a crisis of confidence following their title-winning era. But Frankfurt’s defensive disarray proved even worse, and a goal fest always seemed likely.

Paired together for the first time, Isak and Ékitiké tormented the German back line. Liverpool’s offensive structure looked much improved, though the same couldn’t be said of their defense, which conceded the opening goal. Still, Ékitiké’s persistence paid off with an equalizer, and two corner kicks later, Van Dijk and Konaté both headed in to give Liverpool control.

In the second half, Florian Wirtz took center stage, delivering his first two assists of the season — a perfect cross for Cody Gakpo and a slick pass to set up Szoboszlai.

The 5–1 scoreline might even flatter Frankfurt, as goalkeeper Zetterer produced nine saves to limit the damage.

Liverpool finally have something to smile about again — though Salah’s worrying cameo and Frimpong’s injury will give Arne Slot plenty to think about.
