Overview

The Republic of Ireland national football team represents the country in international association football and is governed by the Football Association of Ireland, which was founded in 1921. The team competes in UEFA competitions and has qualified for several major tournaments, including the FIFA World Cup and the UEFA European Championship. Their most prominent period came in the late 1980s and early 1990s under manager Jack Charlton, when the side reached the quarter-finals of the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy. The team has not won a major international title.

The squad draws players from domestic and overseas clubs. Current notable players include goalkeepers Caoimhin Kelleher and Joshua Keeley, along with Killian Cahill, C. Brann, E. McGinty, and M. O'Leary. Ireland has historically produced players who compete at the highest levels of club football in England and across Europe, and the national team continues to develop younger talent through its underage international programme.
