the middle of a truly intense match, Newcastle and Barcelona shared the points with a 1–1 draw. It was a fortunate result for the Catalans and a frustrating one for the Magpies.

Struggling badly in the Premier League, Newcastle once again transformed themselves in the UEFA Champions League. The hostile atmosphere of St James’ Park quickly put Barcelona under pressure, especially after the Spanish side’s impressive performance in the first match of the league phase.
Newcastle immediately pushed forward, pinning the Barcelona players deep in their own half. Forced to defend, the Catalans could thank the Magpies’ lack of precision in the final third. Anthony Elanga repeatedly tried to make the difference, but his final touch was often lacking.
After fifteen suffocating minutes for Barcelona, the pressure finally eased and Lamine Yamal began to see more of the ball. But he was brilliantly contained by Lewis Hall, who handled the young star perfectly. Solid in one-on-one situations and well supported by the defensive help of Sandro Tonali and Dan Burn, Yamal quickly found himself isolated.
Barcelona looked physically tired and struggled to seriously threaten Aaron Ramsdale in goal.
The pattern remained similar in the second half, but this time Newcastle gradually grew stronger and finished the match at a relentless pace. With the introductions of Jacob Murphy, Anthony Gordon, and Tino Livramento, Newcastle added technical quality to their already intense approach.
The pressure finally paid off when Harvey Barnes opened the scoring after a superb cross from Murphy.
But just when Newcastle seemed to have done the hardest part, Dani Olmo slipped into the penalty area and won a penalty following a foul by Malick Thiaw.
Lamine Yamal stepped up and converted it, securing a draw that felt almost like a victory for Barcelona given the poor performance displayed by Hansi Flick’s side.
