If Ligue 1 is regularly portrayed as a stepping stone league, it also possesses a quality that many of its neighbors can only envy: its shelves are overflowing with young talent. Between academies, clubs that know how to spot a bargain, and gems coming up from Ligue 2, the French league sometimes feels like one giant supermarket where Europe’s biggest clubs come to do their shopping. And this season once again, some products are particularly difficult to leave on the shelf.
Gessime Yassine
In the “bargains” section, Gessime Yassine probably deserves first place. The Moroccan is the perfect example of a player who could easily have slipped through the cracks. Still playing for Marignane-Gignac’s U19 team at the start of the 2023-24 season, the player took a particularly winding path before finding himself under the Ligue 1 spotlight.
After two seasons at Dunkirk, featuring 72 appearances, 8 goals, and 11 assists in all competitions, Yassine joined Strasbourg in January 2026 for €7 million. He had to wait until his 14th Ligue 1 appearance with Racing to truly explode onto the scene. And what a way to introduce himself: a brace against Lens to give the Alsatian side the win.
At just 20 years old, his profile stands out above all for its unpredictability. Small in stature, left-footed, and extremely comfortable in tight spaces, Yassine loves taking on and beating defenders. His individualistic style has even reminded some observers of a certain Hatem Ben Arfa.
Kail Boudache
Heading to Lyon to fill the second bag. Kaïl Boudache is one of the curiosities of Lyon’s start to the season. Born in Alès and initially developed at Olympique Alès before continuing his progression at Nice, the 20-year-old winger had already enjoyed an interesting first professional season before joining OL.
And it did not take long to see why Lyon decided to bet on him. Starting in the away game at Toulouse, Boudache delivered a particularly convincing performance in Lyon’s 2-0 victory. Active offensively, capable of taking players on and making runs forward, he also stood out for his defensive work, to the point of being named Man of the Match.
His journey is also an interesting one: he started playing soccer in Alès before joining Nice in 2022, where he gradually climbed the ranks until making his Ligue 1 debut. His profile as a left-footer playing on the right allows him in particular to cut inside and look to make a difference with the ball at his feet.
Rémi Himbert
Warning: potentially addictive product. At just 18 years old, Rémi Himbert has gone from academy prospect to genuine Lyon sensation in just a few months.
The beginning of 2026 had already offered a first glimpse of his potential. Starting against PAOK in the Europa League, he scored a goal at 17 years and 334 days old, becoming the youngest scorer in OL history in European competition, ahead of players including Karim Benzema. A few weeks later, he did it again against Lens in the Coupe de France, scoring in stoppage time after making a particularly impressive appearance off the bench.
And the summer did not cool down the young striker. Himbert finished Lyon’s preseason with six goals, including two hat tricks, making him OL’s top scorer during that period.
Perhaps the most interesting thing is his fearlessness. He plays with a freedom that contrasts with his young age and already possesses that natural striker’s instinct that cannot necessarily be taught at an academy.
Dro Fernandez
In the premium section, it is impossible not to stop in front of Dro Fernandez. At 18 years old, the Spaniard already carries a particularly prestigious label: trained at La Masia.
PSG signed him in the winter of 2026 for around €8 million, while the young attacking midfielder was still under contract with FC Barcelona. Before leaving, Fernandez had already made a few appearances for Barcelona’s first team and notably impressed in the Champions League with an assist against Olympiacos.
His arrival in Paris also comes with a small particularity: he shares the same agent, Ivan de la Peña, as Luis Enrique. A connection that obviously did not hurt the deal, although the Spanish coach quickly insisted on the need to give his young compatriot time.
Fernandez has nevertheless already shown that he can be decisive. In March, he scored his first goal for PSG against Nice just six minutes after coming on, becoming the youngest player not trained at the club to score for Paris.
Mathys Detourbet
And to finish the shopping trip, we head to the most expensive section. Mathys Detourbet may not yet be the best-known player on this list, but Manchester City has already opened its wallet for him. The English club spent around €25 million on the 19-year-old winger before loaning him to Monaco.
Developed at Troyes, Detourbet played an active role in ESTAC’s promotion to Ligue 1. In Ligue 2, he made 37 appearances, scoring four goals and providing seven assists. His main strength remains his ability to make a difference out wide: explosiveness, directness, and quality in one-on-one situations.
And he did not wait long to show his qualities at Monaco. During his first European experiences, he already provided an assist against Górnik Zabrze in the Conference League playoff round. For a 19-year-old player, that is a particularly interesting first signal.
Above all, his time on the Rock could be a decisive step. Manchester City bought him to help him develop, and Monaco now offers him the ideal environment to discover Ligue 1 with greater responsibilities.
