Stoichkov scored 81 goals in 119 games for CSKA Sofia and shared the 1990 European Golden Shoe. He joined Barcelona that summer and won four consecutive La Liga titles plus the 1992 European Cup. At the 1994 World Cup he scored six goals, including a free kick against Germany in the quarter-final, and took the Golden Boot as Bulgaria finished fourth. He won the Ballon d’Or later that year. He scored 37 goals in 83 appearances for Bulgaria.
