The end of the Cristiano Ronaldo World Cup era, where each of his tournaments went wrong

He walked around the Dallas Stadium pitch on July 6, 2026, wiping his eyes, applauding a Portuguese section that had come to see a coronation and got a funeral instead. Mikel Merino had scored in the first minute of second half stoppage time. Spain 1, Portugal 0. Twenty years of World Cup football, closed with a shrug from a Spanish substitute.

Ronaldo will finish his career as the leading goalscorer in the history of men’s international soccer, a European champion, a two time Nations League winner, and the only man ever to score at six different World Cups. He will also finish it without the trophy that defined the argument he spent his entire career fighting. Lionel Messi got his in 2022. Ronaldo got a round of 16 exit at 41 and a microphone shoved in his face.

The lazy version of this story is that Portugal never gave him enough. The truth is more uncomfortable. Every one of his six tournaments broke in a different place.

  • World Cup appearances: 27, second only to Lionel Messi (30)
  • World Cup goals: 11, the most in Portugal’s history

2006, the closest he ever got, and he was the kid

Germany 2006 remains the deepest run of Ronaldo’s World Cup life, and he was 21 years old. Portugal reached the semifinal, lost 1-0 to France on a Zinedine Zidane penalty, then lost the third place game to the hosts. Ronaldo scored once, a penalty against Iran, and spent most of the tournament as the winger the country was excited about rather than the man the country leaned on.

What went wrong was not Ronaldo. It was timing. Luis Figo, Deco and Pauleta were the spine, Ronaldo was the accelerator, and Portugal ran into a France team that had briefly remembered how to be France. The tragedy is that nobody in that stadium thought this was his peak. Everyone assumed there would be a better version, with a better team, later.

There never was.

2010, the goal drought and the wall of Spain

South Africa gave Portugal a group stage that flattered them badly. They beat North Korea 7-0, Ronaldo got his only goal of the tournament in that game, and they drew their two serious fixtures. Then Spain arrived in the round of 16, played keep away for 90 minutes, and won 1-0 through David Villa.

Portugal went home having scored seven goals in four matches, all of them against North Korea. That is the whole story of 2010. Carlos Queiroz built a side to not lose, and it did not lose very much, but it also could not create anything for the best young forward in Europe.

2014, the knee

Brazil 2014 is the tournament Ronaldo should not have played. He arrived as the reigning Ballon d’Or winner with a patellar tendinosis problem and a thigh issue, trained apart from the squad, and was visibly not himself.

Portugal were destroyed 4-0 by Germany in the opener, Pepe was sent off, and the group was effectively finished by day one. Ronaldo then produced the assist that broke American hearts, the cross that Silvestre Varela headed in at the death against the USA, and scored against Ghana. It was not enough. Portugal were eliminated on goal difference, undone by that opening 4-0.

This is the one that stings on a technicality. Portugal exited a World Cup because of a scoreline conceded in a game their best player was never fit to influence.

2018, the hat trick that went nowhere

Russia produced the single greatest individual performance of his World Cup career. A hat trick against Spain in a 3-3 draw, finished with a free kick over the wall in the 88th minute. It is the image that will lead every tribute video.

  • Ronaldo’s opening three group games in 2018: four goals

Then it stopped. He missed a penalty against Iran, escaped a red card for an elbow, and Portugal scraped into the round of 16 as group runners up. Uruguay dismantled them 2-1 with two Edinson Cavani goals, and Ronaldo did not have a single meaningful sight of goal.

The lesson of 2018 was that a Ronaldo tournament could be carried by Ronaldo for exactly three matches. Fernando Santos never built a second engine.

2022, the benching

Qatar was the humiliation. Ronaldo scored a penalty against Ghana, then faded, then was dropped for the round of 16 against Switzerland. Gonçalo Ramos came in and scored a hat trick in a 6-1 win, which was the most brutal answer a substitute has ever given.

Portugal reached the quarterfinal, their best finish since 2006, and lost 1-0 to Morocco with Ronaldo introduced from the bench, chasing a game he no longer controlled. He left the field in tears down the tunnel. The Santos era ended within days.

2026, contained

Which brings us to the last one. Portugal stumbled to a 1-1 draw with DR Congo, Ronaldo silent. Then he detonated: a brace against Uzbekistan in a 5-0 rout, becoming the first player ever to score at six World Cups and passing Eusébio as Portugal’s leading World Cup scorer. He added a penalty against Croatia in the round of 32, making him the oldest scorer in World Cup knockout history.

  • Touches against Spain in his final World Cup match: 19

Spain simply refused to let him exist. Unai Simón kept a clean sheet that extended his World Cup shutout streak past 600 minutes. Portugal produced 0.60 expected goals from ten shots. Roberto Martínez kept his captain on for all 90 minutes and later explained that you do not remove Cristiano Ronaldo when you need a goal, which is either loyalty or a confession, depending on your mood.

The verdict

Six tournaments. One semifinal, reached before he was old enough to be blamed for anything. Two round of 16 exits to Spain, twenty years apart, bookending everything.

Ronaldo’s own answer is that 2016 in France counts the same. It does not, and he knows it. But 11 goals across six World Cups, at six different stages of one man’s physical life, is a record that belongs entirely to him. The trophy was always going to go to someone else. The longevity never will.
