Overview

Portugal is one of Europe's leading international football sides, governed by the Federação Portuguesa de Futebol, which was founded in 1914. The team competes in UEFA competitions and has won two major international titles: the UEFA European Championship in 2016, claimed on home soil in France under coach Fernando Santos, and the inaugural UEFA Nations League in 2019. Portugal has consistently qualified for major tournaments over recent decades and reached the semi-finals of the 1966 FIFA World Cup, a result that remained a high point for the country for many years.

The current squad combines experienced and younger players across all positions. Goalkeepers include Diogo Costa, José Sá and Rui Silva. The outfield group features defenders such as João Cancelo, Diogo Dalot and Rúben Dias, a midfield built around Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva, and an attack that includes Cristiano Ronaldo alongside Gonçalo Ramos and Rafael Leão. Portugal wear red and green as their traditional colours.
