Elche host Valencia with relegation pressure building on Los Che

Chris Yohou Avatar

Four days after beating Pinatar 3-1 away in the Copa del Rey Round of 128, Elche return to Estadio Manuel Martínez Valero with some confidence behind them. Their opponents, Valencia, arrive in a far darker place: 19th in La Liga, six points from ten games, and already inside the relegation zone under Javier Aguirre. A win for Elche on Sunday would push them further clear of the bottom three; a win for Valencia might just begin to make this season look salvageable.

Elche vs Valencia

What’s at stake

Elche sit 16th on 10 points, just one point above Levante and three above the relegated places. Valencia are 19th with only six points, four behind Getafe in 18th and four behind Elche themselves. Three points here would pull Valencia level with Elche and suddenly shift the pressure upward in the table. For the home side, a victory locks in a five-point buffer over the drop zone and would represent their best run of form in the league this season.

A Valencia defeat leaves Aguirre’s side with only six points from eleven games and in real danger of getting cut adrift from the teams above them. Elche can afford to be patient, a draw keeps them comfortably mid-table for now, but Martin Anselmi will know that home games against direct rivals are exactly where points need to be collected.

Elche vs Valencia

How they got here

Elche’s last five results read W-W-D-D-W: a 3-1 win at Espanyol in September, back-to-back draws against Celta Vigo and Villarreal, then a 3-0 road win at Rayo Vallecano, followed by the Copa del Rey victory over Pinatar. That’s three wins and two draws across their last five games in all competitions, a sequence that has quietly stabilized a squad that looked shaky early in the campaign. Valencia’s last five tell a different story: one win, three draws, and two losses. They beat Alaves on the road in September but have since drawn with Racing Santander and Athletic Club before losing at home to Real Sociedad and then to Villarreal last week.

In La Liga, Elche have 10 points from 10 games (2 wins, 4 draws, 4 losses), sitting 16th. Valencia have 6 points from 10 games (1 win, 3 draws, 6 losses), 19th. The visitors have conceded 17 goals this season, the same number as Elche, but have scored only 7 compared to Elche’s 14, a goal difference of -10 that reflects how badly their attack has underperformed.

Key battle to watch

Valencia’s attacking output has been the core problem all season. With only 7 goals in 10 league games, Javier Aguirre needs his forwards, including Umar Sadiq, Hugo Duro, and Arnaut Danjuma, to create and convert against an Elche side that has Bambo Diaby and Victor Chust holding the back line. If Valencia cannot produce more going forward than they have in recent weeks, Elche’s compact shape at home should be enough to keep them at arm’s length. The midfield control battle between players like Gonzalo Villar and Federico Redondo for Elche against Pepelu and Javi Guerra for Valencia will likely decide which side dictates the rhythm.

Our Prediction

History favors Valencia in this fixture, they have won six of the last ten meetings, but their current form and goal-scoring record make it hard to back them on the road. Elche are the more settled side right now, with three wins in their last five across all competitions and the home crowd behind them. Expect a tight, low-scoring match where Elche have the edge to take three points and push further clear of trouble.
