LAFC look to build on Real Salt Lake rout as Kansas City visit BMO

Chris Yohou Avatar

Three days after putting Real Salt Lake away 3-1 at BMO Stadium, Los Angeles FC have little time to sit on it. Sporting Kansas City arrive on Saturday in what looks like a favorable matchup on paper, but Peter Vermes’s side collected their own 2-1 win over Minnesota United on Thursday, and they travel with some momentum of their own. For LAFC, sitting third in the Western Conference at 30 points, two behind co-leaders Vancouver Whitecaps and San Jose Earthquakes, getting the three points here keeps pressure on the teams above them.

What’s at stake

LAFC sit third in the Western Conference with 30 points from 17 matches, two points behind Vancouver Whitecaps and San Jose Earthquakes, who each have 32 but have played fewer matches. Real Salt Lake and FC Dallas are both on 26 points and breathing down their necks, meaning every point dropped could cost LAFC a top-two spot, which carries implications for playoff seeding. A win here would at least temporarily lift Guillermo Hoyos’s side to within touching distance of the top two while holding off the chasing pack.

For Sporting Kansas City, the picture is starkly different. They sit 15th in the Western Conference on 14 points from 16 games, a record of 4 wins, 2 draws, and 10 losses. With 40 goals conceded in 16 matches, the defensive numbers have been brutal all season. Kansas City will not threaten any meaningful position above midtable, so this trip west functions more as a chance to build on back-to-back results and test themselves against a top-three side. For LAFC, dropping points to a team this far down the table would sting regardless of the calendar position.

How they got here

LAFC’s last five competitive matches read W-W-W-W-L across all competitions, with the only blemish a 3-2 defeat at Nashville SC in May. Since then, they’ve beaten Seattle Sounders 1-0 at home, won 3-0 at the LA Galaxy, and dealt three goals to Real Salt Lake on Thursday. The form table shows WWWLL as their last five in the standings, with the two losses coming earlier in the run. Denis Bouanga is listed in the squad and will be a focal point going forward. Sporting Kansas City go into this one on a mixed sequence: W-L-L-W in their last four league outings, with a 2-3 defeat at St. Louis City sandwiched between wins. Their most recent result, the 2-1 home victory over Minnesota United, snapped a two-match losing streak.

LAFC occupy third place on 30 points, two off the top and four clear of fourth-placed Real Salt Lake on 26. Kansas City are 15th on 14 points, which puts them 16 points behind LAFC and 12 behind the lowest playoff position currently occupied by the teams above them in the West. The gap between where these two clubs stand in the table is the clearest indicator of how differently they approach this fixture.

Key battle to watch

Kansas City’s defense has shipped 40 goals in 16 MLS matches this season, by far the worst record among the sides LAFC have faced recently. LAFC have scored three in each of their last three matches across all competitions. The question is whether Peter Vermes can organize his backline tightly enough to disrupt LAFC’s rhythm in transition, particularly given how freely Bouanga and the LAFC forwards have moved through defenses lately. If Kansas City concede early, their tendency to chase the game opens space for LAFC to punish them on the counter, which is where this matchup could get away from the visitors quickly.

Our Prediction

The head-to-head record tells its own story: LAFC have not lost to Sporting Kansas City in their last 10 meetings, winning eight and drawing two. Kansas City’s defensive numbers this season give little reason to expect that changes at BMO Stadium. LAFC should control possession and territory, and with the forward line in its current run of form, a home win is the logical outcome. The only real variable is whether Kansas City can stay compact long enough to make it a frustrating afternoon, but LAFC’s depth up front makes that scenario unlikely to hold for 90 minutes.
