Cincinnati’s skid deepens as Atlanta look to climb in the East

Chris Yohou Avatar

FC Cincinnati looked sharp enough in their 3-1 win over CF Montreal two weeks ago, but that result now looks like an outlier. Pat Noonan’s side have gone winless in their last four outings and arrive at Mercedes-Benz Stadium sitting tenth in the Eastern Conference with 33 points from 26 games, just one point ahead of the last guaranteed playoff spot. Atlanta United, meanwhile, are stuck four points further back in 14th, desperate to string together a run that can drag them back into postseason contention. This mid-week matchup in Atlanta carries real weight for both sides, even if the drama is playing out somewhere in the middle of the table.

What’s at stake

The Eastern Conference sends nine teams to the playoffs, and right now the ninth-place spot belongs to New York City FC on 33 points from 27 games. FC Cincinnati are level on points but have played one fewer game, meaning a win in Atlanta would push them to 36 points and create breathing room over the cluster of teams hunting that final direct berth. New York Red Bulls also sit on 33 points in eighth, so the gap between Cincinnati and the cutoff is essentially zero. A loss or draw and they could find themselves staring up at the playoff line rather than sitting on it.

For Atlanta, the math is harder but not impossible. Gerardo Martino’s team trails Cincinnati by six points with a game in hand, and the gap to ninth place is also six points. Three points here would cut that deficit to three and reignite a chase that has looked increasingly faint. A defeat, though, would likely end any realistic ambition of reaching the postseason and leave Atlanta playing out the schedule without much to play for.

How they got here

Atlanta’s last five results read W-D-D-L-D (reading from most recent back: draw with New York City FC 2-2, win at Portland 1-0, draw at DC United 0-0, home loss to Orlando 2-3, draw at Inter Miami 2-2). That is three points from the last four matches, a pace that simply does not generate playoff momentum. The lone bright spot was the road win at Portland, showing Martino’s side can earn results away from home, but inconsistency at Mercedes-Benz Stadium has been a persistent problem with a -13 goal difference underlining defensive fragility.

Cincinnati’s form is the more alarming of the two. Their last five results: loss at CF Montreal 1-3, draw at Houston 2-2, draw at home to Charlotte 3-3, heavy loss at Philadelphia 0-5, loss at Nashville 0-4. That is one point from their last five and three consecutive matches without a win going back further. Noonan’s side have conceded 64 goals in the Eastern Conference this season, the worst defensive record among teams still in or around the playoff spots. They are scoring regularly enough (55 goals for), but the defensive numbers make every game an adventure.

Key battle to watch

With Cincinnati leaking goals at an alarming rate and Atlanta needing to score to stay in the playoff conversation, the central defensive line of Noonan’s back four will be under sustained pressure from Atlanta’s forward options, which include Brenden Embolo and Miguel Almiron. If Cincinnati’s defense continues at the rate it has over the last month, Atlanta’s attack does not need to be brilliant to find openings. The home crowd at Mercedes-Benz Stadium could become a factor if Atlanta scores first, putting immediate pressure on a Cincinnati side that has shown limited ability to respond from losing positions recently.

Our Prediction

Cincinnati’s defensive numbers are hard to ignore, and their form over the last five games offers little confidence going into a road match against a team that genuinely needs the points. Atlanta tend to be competitive at home and Gerardo Martino’s side will be motivated by what a win means for their playoff standing. Expect a high-energy, open game that Cincinnati may struggle to control, though their quality going forward gives them a route back into any scoreline.
