Passarella captained Argentina to the 1978 World Cup and was the first Argentine to lift the trophy. He scored 90 goals in 266 games for River Plate, many of them from penalties and headers, while playing centre-back. He moved to Fiorentina in 1982 and added 26 goals in 109 games. He was in the squad that won the 1986 World Cup but illness and injury kept him off the field. He later coached Argentina.
