Cruyff shaped football twice: as the best European player of the 1970s, and afterwards as the coach whose ideas the modern game still runs on. At Ajax he won three consecutive European Cups playing a system in which positions were suggestions rather than assignments, and he was the player who made that system legible.

The 1974 World Cup is the strange centrepiece of his career. The Netherlands lost the final to West Germany and are still the team from that tournament everyone remembers. Cruyff won the Golden Ball, invented a turn in a group match against Sweden that carries his name half a century later, and never played in another World Cup.

His second act mattered more. As Barcelona’s coach he won the club’s first European Cup in 1992, established the youth academy method that produced Xavi, Iniesta and Guardiola, and set the stylistic direction Barcelona have followed ever since. The teams that dominated the 2010s were arguing his case long after he stopped coaching.
