Simeone’s Atletico chase Barcelona summit against struggling Levante

Chris Yohou Avatar

Five consecutive La Liga wins have Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid sitting two points behind league leaders Barcelona and one ahead of Real Madrid heading into Saturday’s trip to the Estadio Ciudad de Valencia. Levante, 14th on 10 points, arrive at this fixture off a 1-2 loss at Real Sociedad last weekend, a result that left them looking over their shoulder at the three teams currently in the relegation zone rather than pushing up the table. The gap between these two sides in the standings is 15 points, and the story on matchday 11 is really about whether Atletico can maintain the relentless run that has them on the verge of going top.

Levante vs Atletico Madrid

What’s at stake

Barcelona lead La Liga with 27 points from 10 games, Atletico Madrid sit second on 25, and Real Madrid are third on 24. That is the tightest three-way title conversation in Spanish football this season, and every dropped point is amplified. A win here would put Atletico on 28 points, giving them at least a temporary lead at the summit depending on Barcelona’s result. A slip, though, would hand Real Madrid the chance to leapfrog Simeone’s side and leave Atletico third by the end of the round.

For Levante, the arithmetic is less dramatic but the points still matter. They sit 14th on 10 points, level with 15th-place Elche and just one ahead of the sides currently in the drop zone. Four defeats from their opening 10 games and a negative goal difference (16 scored, 19 conceded) means this is a squad that needs to be adding points steadily, not giving away home fixtures against opponents who have been in ruthless form.

Levante vs Atletico Madrid

How they got here

Atletico have won five straight La Liga matches, taking care of Alaves, Espanyol, and Deportivo La Coruna in the most recent run, and they sandwiched a 2-0 home win over Manchester United in the Champions League in between. The only blemish in their last five outings across all competitions was a 1-1 draw away at VfB Stuttgart in Europe. In domestic football they have conceded just eight league goals all season, the fewest of any side in the top three. Levante’s form reads W-D-D-W-L across the last five, with the 3-1 home win over Athletic Club on October 21 the high point, followed immediately by the defeat at Real Sociedad.

Atletico are second in La Liga. Levante are 14th, five points behind Racing Santander in 13th and one point clear of Elche in 15th. The two squads are operating in completely different parts of the table, and Simeone arrives in Valencia having built a side that concedes sparingly and grinds out results even when they are not at their best, as the 1-0 wins over Espanyol and Deportivo showed.

Key battle to watch

Levante have scored 16 league goals in 10 games, which is a reasonable return for a mid-table side, and they showed they can be dangerous in open exchanges, pulling off a 3-3 at home to Sevilla and a 3-1 win over Athletic. The question is whether they can generate that same volume of chances against an Atletico defensive structure that has kept the league’s second-best defensive record this season. Atletico’s fullbacks, Grimaldo and Pubill, tend to be aggressive in attack but disciplined in transition, and Simeone’s midfield block of Cardoso, Hjulmand, and Barrios has been hard to play through. Levante will need to find space on the counter rather than trying to build through Atletico’s press, and if they lose the ball cheaply in midfield, Julián Álvarez, Lookman, and Lee Kang-In have the pace and intelligence to punish them quickly.

Our Prediction

Atletico have too much momentum and defensive solidity to slip up here. Simeone’s side have won five consecutive La Liga games without conceding more than one goal in any of them, and a Levante team that just lost at Real Sociedad does not look equipped to end that run. Expect Atletico to control the tempo, absorb whatever Levante offer early, and find the winning goal through their front line’s individual quality. The head-to-head across the last decade favors the visitors, and nothing in Levante’s recent form suggests they can change that pattern.
