The club competes in La Liga, the top division of Spanish football, and plays its home matches at the Estadio de Vallecas. Vallecas is a working-class neighbourhood, and the club has long been associated with its local community and left-wing political identity, which distinguishes it from many of its contemporaries.
The club has spent much of its history moving between the first and second divisions. It has never won a major domestic title, but has produced competitive La Liga campaigns on several occasions and reached Copa del Rey finals in the past.
