Overview
Athletic Club is a professional football club based in Bilbao, in the Basque Country of Spain. Founded in 1898, the club competes in La Liga, the top division of Spanish football, and plays its home matches at San Mamés, a modern stadium in central Bilbao. Athletic Club is one of only three clubs never to have been relegated from La Liga since the league's formation, alongside Real Madrid and Barcelona.
The club is widely known for its long-standing policy of fielding only players who are Basque by origin or upbringing. This commitment has defined its identity for well over a century and continues to distinguish it from almost every other professional club in Europe.
Athletic Club has won La Liga on multiple occasions and has lifted the Copa del Rey numerous times. Current squad members include goalkeeper Unai Simón, defender Yeray, and several other players developed through the club's own academy system.
