The 2026 summer transfer window will go down as one of the craziest in Premier League history. More than £3.4 billion was spent by English clubs, with several transfers exceeding £100 million. But spending huge amounts does not necessarily mean having a successful transfer window. Between clubs that rebuilt their squads, those that specifically targeted their weaknesses, and those that simply stacked talent, the strategies were very different.

Manchester City : return of the juggernaut
Manchester City did not do things halfway. Pep Guardiola’s club spent around £457.5 million, more than any other Premier League team. And above all, City significantly strengthened its midfield with Elliot Anderson, Ayyoub Bouaddi, and Enzo Fernández. Combined, the three signings cost around £327 million.
The arrival of Enzo Fernández is obviously the highlight of the summer. Signed from Chelsea for £125 million, the Argentine matches the British transfer record and gives Pep Guardiola a midfielder capable of dictating the tempo, breaking lines, and contributing in both phases of the game. Anderson, signed from Nottingham Forest for £116 million, adds power, energy, and the ability to make runs forward.
But City did not stop in midfield. The club also signed Iliman Ndiaye from Everton for a fee that could reach £65 million and secured Omar Marmoush on loan from Tottenham.
This transfer window therefore looks like a genuine rebuilding operation. After a season in which City appeared less dominant, Guardiola now has new profiles capable of refreshing his squad.
The downside: the bill is enormous, and some of the new signings will have to justify their price tags quickly. But in terms of power and depth, it is difficult to find anything more impressive.
Chelsea : a major overhaul
Chelsea experienced a particularly eventful transfer window. With Xabi Alonso taking over on the bench, the Blues needed to reshape their squad and largely responded to that need.
The headline signing is Morgan Rogers, brought in from Aston Villa for around £117 million. The England international is expected to become one of the driving forces of the new Chelsea attack and give Alonso a player capable of operating between midfield and the attack.
Chelsea also strengthened its defense with Maxence Lacroix, who arrived from Crystal Palace for around £52 million, while Emiliano Martínez brought a huge amount of experience in goal after his time at Aston Villa. Valentin Barco, Pep Chavarría, Geovany Quenda, Danny Welbeck, and Jordan Henderson complete a particularly diverse recruitment campaign.
But the main story will obviously remain Enzo Fernández. Chelsea sold him to Manchester City for £125 million before attempting to replace him with Lamine Camara. The Senegalese midfielder’s transfer ultimately collapsed in the final hours of the window after Monaco changed its stance.
This is the main flaw of Chelsea’s summer: the Blues significantly strengthened their squad, but failed to directly replace their Argentine midfielder.
That does not prevent Chelsea from having a very coherent transfer window overall, particularly thanks to a departure strategy that generated significant resources.
Leeds : build a team to progress
Leeds may not have the financial resources of Manchester City or Chelsea, but their transfer window deserves a huge amount of respect. For their return to the Premier League, the club set out to build a team capable of immediately surviving at the higher level.
The signing of James Trafford is the symbol of that ambition. The goalkeeper, who arrived from Manchester City for around £40 million, has become Leeds’ new No. 1 and represents a major investment in a particularly important position for a promoted team.
Leeds also strengthened its defense with Tarik Muharemović, Nico Elvedi, and Jaka Bijol, while adding experience and technical quality in midfield with Anton Stach and Sean Longstaff.
And above all, Daniel Farke now has an attack that looks nothing like a typical promoted side. Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Noah Okafor, Harry Wilson, Brenden Aaronson, and Lukas Nmecha offer several different profiles. When Brentford visited, Farke could therefore line up Trafford in goal, Stach in midfield, and Wilson alongside Calvert-Lewin in attack.
Leeds’ transfer window is therefore interesting because it follows a simple logic: raise the overall level of the squad without losing its identity. The club did not try to sign big names just to generate headlines, but players capable of immediately meeting the demands of the Premier League.
That is exactly what you expect from an ambitious promoted team.
Tottenham : an XXL rebuild
Tottenham is probably the club that transformed its squad the most this summer. After a disastrous season, the Spurs handed the keys to the project to Roberto De Zerbi, with a clear mission: rebuild a team capable of quickly returning to the top.
And to do so, the club did not hold back financially.
Tottenham notably signed Sandro Tonali for around £92.5 million, Mateus Fernandes for around £85 million, Sávio for around £75 million, and Jan Paul van Hecke for around £52 million. They were joined by Marcos Senesi, who arrived as a free agent, Andy Robertson, also without a transfer fee, as well as Omar Marmoush and Mykhailo Mudryk on loan.
The logic is particularly interesting. De Zerbi did not simply sign spectacular attacking players: he rebuilt the backbone of his team.
Tonali brings intensity and leadership to midfield. Mateus Fernandes offers creativity and the ability to carry the ball forward. Van Hecke and Senesi strengthen the defense, while Robertson brings experience and quality crossing. Up front, Sávio and Marmoush are expected to provide more explosiveness and variety.
Tottenham has therefore almost built a new team in a single summer.
The obvious risk is having a squad that needs time to learn how to play together. But given the scale of the project, Spurs have given De Zerbi considerable weapons.
An XXL transfer window, but above all, one that fits a genuine rebuild.
Brentford : the smartest transfer window
What if the best transfer window was not actually the one that spent the most?
Brentford deserves the top spot precisely for that reason. While other clubs were engaged in a genuine spending race, the Bees kept the core of their team intact and added five targeted signings: Mamadou Sangaré, Jaidon Anthony, Jannik Schuster, Callum Wilson, and El Hadji Malick Diouf.
The signing of Sangaré, who arrived from Lens for around £39 million to £41 million, is particularly important. The defensive midfielder has a profile that fits Brentford’s style of soccer very well: aggression, ball-winning ability, and the capacity to cover a lot of ground.
Up front, Callum Wilson is probably one of the most interesting moves of the summer after arriving as a free agent. His Premier League experience gives Keith Andrews another option behind Igor Thiago, who scored 22 goals last season. Jaidon Anthony adds explosiveness out wide, while Schuster strengthens the defense and Diouf provides another option on the flank.
But the most important thing lies elsewhere: Brentford did not break what was already working.
The club kept the core of its team after a season that ended with a ninth-place finish and prioritized continuity following the numerous changes made in the summer of 2025. Director of football Phil Giles also explained that the recruitment strategy had been built around this idea: keeping Keith Andrews’ group together while adding targeted reinforcements.
That is also why this transfer window brings back memories of 2019, considered one of the most important in the club’s recent history. At the time, Brentford signed Bryan Mbeumo, Christian Nørgaard, David Raya, Mathias Jensen, Ethan Pinnock, and Pontus Jansson, players who would later help the club’s progression all the way to the Premier League.
