Scotland have fielded a national team since 1873, playing in World Cup qualifying and their confederation’s tournaments.

Overview

Scotland is one of the oldest national football teams in the world. The Scottish Football Association was founded in 1873, making it among the earliest national federations in existence. Scotland played in the first official international football match, against England in 1872, which ended in a goalless draw. The team competes in UEFA qualifying competitions and has participated in several FIFA World Cup finals tournaments, though it has not won a major senior international title.

The squad has historically drawn players from clubs across Scotland, England, and other European leagues. Current notable players include goalkeepers Craig Gordon and Angus Gunn, defender Liam Kelly, centre-backs Grant Hanley and Jack Hendry, and left-back Aaron Hickey. These players represent a mix of domestic and internationally based talent.

Scotland plays its home matches primarily at Hampden Park in Glasgow, a ground with a long association with Scottish football. The team is managed through the Scottish Football Association and competes under the nickname the Tartan Army, a term more commonly applied to its supporters.
