Deco was born in São Bernardo do Campo, Brazil, and made his Portugal debut in 2003. He scored in Porto’s 3–0 win over Monaco in the 2004 Champions League final. He joined Barcelona that summer and won the competition again in 2006 against Arsenal. He was voted UEFA Club Footballer of the Year for 2003–04 and finished second in that year’s Ballon d’Or. He won 75 caps for Portugal and played in the Euro 2004 final against Greece.
