Totti played 619 league matches for Roma across twenty-five seasons and turned down Real Madrid twice. He scored for a club that won the league once in his time there, in 2001, and he stayed anyway — which is the whole of his reputation in Italy and the reason the Stadio Olimpico still sings his name.
He was a second striker who dropped deep before that was a recognised role, and he scored 250 Serie A goals, second on the all-time list. He won the World Cup in 2006 having spent the tournament recovering from a broken ankle sustained four months earlier.
He retired in 2017 at forty, having scored a Serie A goal in every season from 1994 to 2017. The letter he read to the crowd at his final match was written by a journalist, which he admitted immediately and which nobody minded.
