Jordan in World Cup 2026 : surprise guest who doesn’t stop here

Imrane Avatar

Nobody expected to see Jordan at the World Cup just a few years ago.

Long considered a second-tier nation on the Asian football scene, the Levantine country has completely reshaped the continental hierarchy by reaching the final of the 2024 AFC Asian Cup and then securing, for the first time in its history, qualification for a FIFA World Cup. That achievement alone already stands as the greatest accomplishment in Jordanian football history.

But the Nashama — “The Brave Ones” — have no intention of stopping there.

Led by a talented generation spearheaded by Mousa Al-Tamari and Yazan Al-Naimat, Jordan arrives in North America with absolutely no pressure on its shoulders. Unlike most of the teams in its group, it has no World Cup legacy to defend. Everything it accomplishes during this tournament will be unprecedented. And that is precisely what makes it dangerous.

Jordan represents one of the most compelling stories of the 2026 World Cup: a team that grew in the shadow of Asia’s traditional powers before earning a seat at football’s top table through steady progress and a strong collective identity.

Jordan will compete in Group J alongside:

  • Argentina
  • Algeria
  • Austria

On paper, this is an extremely challenging group.

Defending world champion Argentina enters as the overwhelming favorite. Behind La Albiceleste, the battle for qualification is expected to be fiercely contested between Algeria, Austria, and Jordan.

For the Jordanians, the objective will be to take advantage of their outsider status. Unlike Argentina or Algeria, they will not face significant expectations. Several observers even believe that the race for second place could remain wide open until the final matchday.

Jordan possesses enough quality to trouble more experienced opponents, particularly through its tactical discipline and its ability to exploit spaces on the counterattack, especially against an Algerian side that can occasionally lose concentration during transition phases.

Key players

Mousa Al-Tamari

The undisputed star of Jordanian football.

After spells in Belgium and France, Al-Tamari became the first Jordanian player to truly establish himself in one of Europe’s major leagues. Fast, unpredictable, and capable of dribbling past multiple defenders in a single move, he represents the majority of Jordan’s attacking threat.

During the 2024 Asian Cup, he was one of the key architects of his country’s historic run to the final. For many observers, he remains the player most capable of changing a match on his own.

Yazan Al-Naimat

The perfect complement to Al-Tamari.

The Jordanian striker has emerged as one of Asian football’s biggest revelations in recent years. Mobile, hardworking, and particularly clinical inside the penalty area, he forms an attacking partnership with Al-Tamari that carried Jordan throughout its qualification campaign.

Against more experienced defenses, his finishing ability could prove decisive.

Nizar Al-Rashdan

Often less publicized than the team’s attacking stars, Al-Rashdan is nevertheless indispensable to Jordan’s balance.

Operating in front of the back line, he provides the link between defensive recoveries and attacking build-up. His work rate and tactical discipline allow the team’s offensive players to express themselves with greater freedom. The Guardian has frequently highlighted his importance within the overall structure of the Nashama.

Yazeed Abu Laila

The quiet hero of Jordan’s historic rise.

Outstanding during the 2024 Asian Cup, Abu Laila established himself as one of the most reliable goalkeepers in Asia. His performances during the qualification campaign played a major role in securing Jordan’s historic World Cup berth.

In a group where his team is likely to endure long defensive stretches, his importance cannot be overstated.

The face of Jordan in 2026

Jordan enters the 2026 World Cup riding a wave of historic momentum.

Qualification through the Asian qualifiers extended the positive trajectory that began during the 2024 Asian Cup, where the Nashama eliminated Iraq, Tajikistan, and South Korea before ultimately falling to Qatar in the final.

That campaign fundamentally changed perceptions of Jordanian football on the international stage. Previously viewed as a modest national team, Jordan is now regarded as a side capable of competing with several of Asia’s established powers.

One of its greatest strengths lies in continuity. Moroccan head coach Jamal Sellami has maintained the core group that shined during the Asian Cup while strengthening key areas of the team. His tactical work has been widely praised for allowing Jordan to maximize the qualities of its attacking leaders.

According to Shoot Africa, Jordan also stands out because of its cohesion. Unlike some national teams that rely heavily on a few star players, it is built around an extremely disciplined collective in which every player understands his role perfectly.

That may be what makes Jordan so difficult to face.

Admittedly, Jordan’s squad appears less impressive on paper than those of Argentina or Algeria. However, the team possesses a solid defensive structure, excellent transitional play, and two forwards capable of punishing even the slightest defensive mistake.

Virtually nobody expects Jordan to reach the Round of 16.

And that is precisely where its strength may lie.

For the first time in its history, Jordan will participate in a FIFA World Cup. But judging by the words of its players and coaching staff, this is not merely a reward for past achievements.

It is the beginning of a new chapter.

And after already surprising all of Asia, the Nashama now dream of surprising the world.
